South Korea – South Korea passed 700,000 IPTV subscribers for the first time in August, hitting 706,706 on August 23, an increase of more than 100,000 subscribers from the end of July, according to reports in local news website JoongAng Daily. In July, subscriber numbers increased by 4,000 to 5,000 daily, but recently this has gone up to around 7,000, said an official at the Korea Communications Commission (KCC). The growth is attributed to the government’s push to popularise IPTV in Korea. The KCC has been pressuring the country’s three IPTV operators (KT, SK Broadband and LG Dacom) to increase investments in their services in order to reach a joint total of 2mn subscribers by the end of this year. As of the end of July, KT led the market with around 274,000 subscribers, followed by LG Dacom with around 189,000 subscribers, followed by SK Broadband with around 132,000, according to the KCC. KT reportedly plans to invest around US$ 277.8mn in IPTV, while SK Broadband and LG plan to inject KRW 265bn and KRW 240bn respectively into their IPTV services, according to JoongAng Daily.
