Singapore – MediaCorp confirmed last week that it has put in an offer to telecast the four key World Cup matches on its free-to-air channels. These are the opening game between host South Africa and Mexico on June 11, the semi-finals on July 6 and 7, and the final on July 11. MediaCorp is at present waiting for FIFA’s response, and according to reports, there is no specific FIFA ruling for any match to be provided free-of-charge to any broadcaster nor is there a mandate for any match to be aired on a free-to-air basis. In 2006, MediaCorp telecast four World Cup matches – the opening, two semi-finals and the final game on its free-to-air channels. Spokesperson for Football Media Services, the company based in Singapore which sells the broadcasting rights for FIFA, was unavailable for comment at press time. Joint bid between rivals SingTel and StarHub had resulted in a stalemate.
