Passion Distribution announces the first international commission of Virgin Island, the groundbreaking social-experiment format that has become one of the UK’s most talked-about television events of 2025.
Following its record-breaking debut on Channel 4, Virgin Island has now been commissioned by public broadcaster BNNVARA in the Netherlands, marking the first locally produced international adaptation of the format. Virgin Island will be produced by Concept Street in the Netherlands. Several further international versions are currently in development and will be announced in due course.
Originally produced by Double Act for Channel 4, Virgin Island delivered the broadcaster’s biggest streaming launch in its history across any genre. The series achieved Channel 4’s highest consolidated share among 16–34-year-olds since modern records began more than 20 years ago, delivering four times the channel’s benchmark for the demographic.
Beyond ratings, Virgin Island became a major social and cultural talking point. The series generated more than 13 million views across Channel 4’s social channels, with TikTok playing a key role in driving discovery and engagement. Overall, the show attracted unprecedented media attention, with more than 800 pieces of coverage across television, radio, print and online platforms.
Reflecting the strength of its performance and cultural impact, Channel 4 commissioned a second season just 14 days after the Season One finale — the fastest recommission in the broadcaster’s history. Season Two has now completed filming and is set to raise the bar once again.
The series has also received significant industry recognition, earning six award nominations to date, including International Format of the Year, a Grierson Award nomination and a Broadcast Award for Best Factual Entertainment Programme.
Commenting on the Dutch commission, BNNVARA said, “BNNVARA has a long tradition of making the uncomfortable discussable, especially when it comes to sexuality, intimacy and the realities young people face. In a time where performance pressure, online comparison and loneliness shape how young generations relate to each other, honest conversations about connection are more necessary than ever. Virgin Island is bold, vulnerable and culturally urgent, exactly the kind of format that resonates with young audiences while taking them seriously. It reflects our belief that public service television should not shy away from taboos but open them up.”
Producers Double Act added, “We’re thrilled to see that Virgin Island is taking off around the world. In an era of rising intimacy anxiety and a lack of physical connection, this show’s strikingly provocative conceit tackles a universal emergency head on – delivering something that is authentic, emotionally-rich and truly transformational.”
Alongside the new format commissions, Passion Distribution has already secured multiple finished-programme sales, with Season One licensed to several broadcasters including:
• BNNVARA (The Netherlands)
• Television New Zealand Ltd (New Zealand)
• Play Media NV (Flemish-speaking Belgium)
• SBS (Australia)
Passion Distribution commented, “The audacity of the concept, combined with Double Act’s nuanced documentary approach, has delivered a bold social experiment that speaks directly to the real concerns of young people. Spawning genuine OMG-level virality and streaming success, it’s no surprise that the world is taking notice.”
