One year after its initial announcement, Miso Film’s, epic historical drama series ROYAL BLOOD (Blått Blod) moves decisively toward production. The six-part premium miniseries selected as the first ever flagship scripted project backed by TV2 Norway, TV4 Sweden and TV 2 Denmark, also known as the Scandi Alliance, has now secured a production commitment. The news was officially announced today at the TV Drama Vision conference during the Gothenburg Film Festival and kicks off the next phase of international financing.
ROYAL BLOOD portrays the dramatic power struggles between the Scandinavian royal houses during a time of profound geopolitical upheaval from 1807 to 1814. As Europe’s great powers collide, the series follows a small group of ambitious figures in Denmark, Norway, and Sweden forced to navigate desire, loyalty, identity, and ambition, in a world where every personal choice carries national consequences.
The Scandi Alliance further announced that acclaimed Norwegian director Erik Richter Strand will direct the series. His extensive experience in high-end, character-driven dramas include episodes of THE CROWN (Netflix), BEHIND HER EYES (Netflix), I FOUGHT THE LAW (ITV), VALKYRIEN (NRK) and OCCUPIED (TV2). Renowned for combining striking visual precision with emotional depth and sharp power dynamics, Richter Strand brings a bold, contemporary sensibility to period storytelling.
Alice Sommer, Head of Drama at TV 2 Norway, said, “ROYAL BLOOD is a truly epic undertaking that explores how power, loyalty and personal ambition collide at a pivotal moment in Scandinavian history. This is a story that belongs to all of us – Denmark, Norway, and Sweden. ROYAL BLOOD captures a defining moment when our nations’ fates were intertwined in ways that still shape who we are today. We’re incredibly proud to back this ambitious production as the Scandi Alliance’s first flagship series. With Erik Richter Strand at the helm and Miso Film’s proven track record in premium drama, we’re confident this series will resonate deeply with contemporary audiences while setting a new benchmark for Nordic historical drama.”
Producer Kristin Ulseth (Miso Film) continues, “ROYAL BLOOD is about how power really works and how alliances are built and broken, and how the fate of entire nations can hinge on very human choices. At its heart, it’s driven by fear, pride, vulnerability and courage, where even small decisions can have huge consequences. Even though it’s set in the past, the story feels incredibly current, making it both a gripping drama and an unsettling mirror of our own times. With Erik Richter Strand attached and not least his experience on THE CROWN we feel confident that ROYAL BLOOD will have scale and intimacy in a cinematic and deeply relatable way.”
ROYAL BLOOD is created by Nanna Westh, Erik Richter Strand, Monica Boracco, and Katarina Launing, with Nanna Westh (THE LEGACY, CRY WOLF) and Erik Richter Strand (VALKYRIEN, OCCUPIED) serving as head writers.
The series is produced for TV2 Norway, TV4 Sweden and TV2 Denmark, by Kristin Ulseth and Vegard Stenberg Eriksen for Miso Film Norway, in close collaboration with Miso Film Denmark and Miso Film Sweden. With a budget of EUR 15 million, ROYAL BLOOD continues Miso Film’s tradition of delivering premium scripted series with strong creative identities and international reach.
The series is executive produced by Peter Bose, Jonas Allen, Christian Rank, Are Heidenstrøm and Erik Richter Strand.
Miso Film is a Fremantle company. Fremantle will handle international distribution, and the series is expected to start shooting early 2027.
