The highly anticipated A prophet, the series has moved into production, with the first day of shooting on July 3rd. The eight-part show will film in Marseille (central plot location) and Puglia (prison location).
This new take is based on the iconic BAFTA, Cannes Film Festival Grand Prix, nine César-winning, and Oscar-nominated Jacques Audiard film, released by STUDIOCANAL in the UK.
A prophet, the series has been developed by the original team, including creators and writers Abdel Raouf Dafri (Mesrine, Braquo) and Nicolas Peufaillit (The Returns) as well as producer Marco Cherqui (Savages) and in agreement with the producers of the original film, Why Not Productions and Page 114. The series is directed by Enrico Maria Artale (Romulus, Django 2022). STUDIOCANAL will handle international sales.
The series is a distinct rebirth of the character, Malik and his world as seen through the prism of the streets, the characters of present-day Marseille, and the crucible of Baumettes Prison. A true “series noir” at once organic, entertaining, and unsettling. A series without cops, about a criminal among criminals. This series is about survival. A breakneck narrative driven by complex plots with a surrealistic domino effect of repercussions.
The series stars in the lead roles Sami Bouajila (Days of Glory, A Son), Ouassini Embarek (Athena, The Eddy), Matthieu Lucci (Oussekine, Le Patient), Nailia Harzoune (Placés, La Bonne Conduite), Faued Nabba aka Kofs (Bac Nord, Validé) and Moussa Maaskri (Stillwater, Les SEGPAS). For his first role, Mamadou Sidibé will portray Malik El Djebenna, the “prophet”.
Marco Cherqui, series producer, speaking on behalf of the creative team, says, “A prophet, the series is a series of today: as contemporary a story as was the film in its time. We have reimagined Malik as of African origin and, as our characters interchange and transform at the same time as society evolves, our themes remain the same.”
Sébastien Janin, Managing Partner Media Musketeers and series producer, added, “Working with our partners and the creative powerhouse behind the project, will enable us to bring this powerful story to the widest possible audience. We believe it has all the hallmarks of a huge international hit.”
