Spirit: Becoming the World’s Best Bartender, a brand-new feature documentary, launches this week on Prime Video from Something™ Originals (The Man Who Walked Around the World; The Ones Who Keep Walking).
Created and produced by Something™ Originals, the documentary follows three finalists in the lead-up to the World Class Bartender of the Year final in Sydney as they challenge themselves for a title that could change their lives and careers.
Directed by award-winning filmmaker Ross Bolidai (Take Your Shot, Calais; The End of the Jungle) the documentary includes insight from some of the industry’s leading trailblazers. From the godfather of the modern food truck movement, Roy Choi, to owner of some of the world’s best bars including Lyaness in London and Super Lyan in Amsterdam, Ryan Chetiyawardana; to the Director of Mixology at globally-renowned The Connaught Bar in London, Agostino Perrone, and World Class Global Bartender of the Year 2017, Kaitlyn Stewart; the industry icons share their insider knowledge of what it takes to succeed in the world of luxury hospitality – a journey of determination, craft and game-changing flavour.
The team followed Sahil Essani (India), Liisa Lindroos (Finland) and Yui Ogata (Japan) giving a privileged viewpoint into the intimate moments of their personal journeys and the countries they represent. There are tears, when Sahil’s test kitchen is unexpectedly closed (with his precious kit, recipes and ingredients locked inside), triumphs, when Yui retells the story of overcoming gender norms to become a career bartender, and life-changing anticipation, when third time contestant Liisa reveals that this is her last shot at winning the World Class trophy. All three prepare their recipes, pack their bags and take off for the Global Finals, where they compete for the coveted title, meet their heroes, and face unexpected challenges before they return home.
Dan Pickard, Executive Producer and Partner at Something™ Originals, says “We always look for unique opportunities to tell stories that offer fresh perspectives into unknown worlds, so it was a privilege to work with the World Class team and be given access to this incredible global community”.
Director Ross Bolidai says; “The aim of this new documentary was to get under the skin of World Class Global Finals to tell a story of tenacity, determination and spirit that reimagines how cocktails are seen globally. It was an honour to witness the grit each of the competitors displayed from start to finish”.
The documentary was produced as a pilot, with Pickard and his team pitching for a repeatable episodic format. It follows from previous Something™ Originals titles, including The Ones Who Keep Walking, also available to watch on Prime Video.
