As they head to ATF 2022, UK-based distributor Espresso Media International are proud to announce several deals with Japan, Korea and Taiwan’s major public broadcasters.
To Japan’s public service broadcaster NHK, Espresso have licensed Finite: The Climate of Change (1 x 52’), which documents an unlikely alliance between German activists fighting to save an ancient forest, and a rural English community protecting their homes from a new opencast coal mine. An insider’s view into the world of environmental activism, Finite is an emotional insight into the battle between frontline communities, activists and fossil fuel corporations.
Meanwhile, Korea’s EBS have taken social issues documentary The Funeral Director (1 x 52’). The documentary follows a pioneering funeral director, unflinchingly drawing back the veil on an industry that is rarely spoken of. Originally commissioned for RTE, The Funeral Director also airs on Netflix Europe.
For the launch of Taiwan’s PTS+ streaming platform, Espresso have licensed unique space documentary Zero Gravity (1 x 74’). The documentary has been selected by over 70 international film festivals including DOC:NYC, and won 18 documentary awards. PTS have also re-licensed Espresso’s best-selling titles My Beautiful Stutter (1 x 52’, executive produced by Paul Rudd), and End of the Line (1 x 52’, also airing on Peacock).
”We’re honoured to be working with some of Asia’s most prestigious public service broadcasters on delivering powerful documentaries tackling social and environmental issues,” says Jess Reilly, Head of Sales and Acquisitions. “We’re delighted that long-time partner NHK has acquired FINITE, the environmental messages of which deserve to be broadcast far and wide. We’re also delighted to have found homes for three equally powerful documentaries in Taiwan and Korea, and are looking forward to seeing how they are received by audiences.”
