Following the success of the wildly popular Love Between Fairy and Devil, Dylan Wang is set to return in another iQIYI costume period original, Unchained Love, a revenge flick that explores the palace politics set in ancient China. Starring Dylan Wang, Yukee Chen, Peter Ho and Zeng Li, Unchained Love will be premiering on December 27 through iQIYI.
Fans who enjoyed Dylan Wang’s performance in Love Between Fairy and Devil will be excited for this series, where Wang follows his role as the overlord Dongfang Qingcang and continues to show off his penchant for charismatic and “boss-like” characters, this time as the overbearing and arrogant Xiao Duo, an imperial eunuch who wields supreme power in court, only answering to the emperor himself.
Another highlight to look out for in Unchained Love is the return of screen veteran Peter Ho after a year’s hiatus. Peter Ho is known throughout the industry in many identities, as a singer, actor, director, scriptwriter and even model. While he is usually known for his macho and manly characters, this time, he plays a new challenging role as a timid and simple-minded royal prince who is looked down upon by others in court. Within the first episode, we even see him getting overwhelmed and bullied by Dylan Wang‘s character. However, beneath his gentle exterior, Murong Gaogong , who eventually becomes King Fu, is someone who has lived through years of political strife and back-stabbing, showing that he is not as simple as he first seems.
Another big name to look out for in Unchained Love is Zeng Li, who boasts over 20 years of acting experience. She plays Empress Rong An, who holds the crown prince hostage and tries to solidify her place as Empress Dowager in the new reign, putting her in a rivalrous position against Peter Ho’s King Fu. She also holds a candle for Dylan Wang’s handsome eunuch Xiao Duo, and often tries to seduce him, gradually forming a grudge as she gets rebuffed and outsmarted by him time and again.
In Unchained Love, the emperor passes away from illness at the beginning of the series, and change begins within the imperial city, as a faction of officials attempt to wrestle power away from Xiao Duo (played by Dylan Wang), but are quickly put in place by them. At the same time, Empress Rong An (played by Zeng Li) is quick to get rid of her rivals, and takes the young crown prince under her wing to hold on to power. While Xiao and Empress Rong An used to be allies in court, they begin to feel the tension between each other in this battle of wits. Xiao seeks out the simple-minded and timid Murong Gaogong (played by Peter Ho), the only other royal relative who is still alive, to attempt to establish an allyship with him to make him emperor instead. The royal prince agrees, but only if Xiao does him a favour.
It turns out that he has a crush on one of the late emperor’s concubines, Bu Yinlou (played by Yukee Chen). Bu Yinlou is set to be executed alongside the other childless concubines to accompany the late emperor in death. Right before she is about to be hanged, Xiao steps in and rescues Bu, bringing her into his manor, as the two begin to live together and spend time with each other, forming the roots of a budding romance. We also discover that beneath his cold-hearted exterior lies a kind and caring man who is intolerant of injustice and corruption. Over the years, he has worked hard to consolidate power to eventually find out the truth behind the murder of his brother six years ago. As Xiao Duo and Bu Yinlou work together with and engage with both rival factions in the palace, they gradually unveil the nefarious schemes behind the curtain.
Unchained Love will be exclusively available on iQIYI from December 27.
