Leading entertainment conglomerate CJ ENM continues to strengthen its position as the leading global entertainment powerhouse with the introduction of its upcoming Asian original content at APOS last week. In addition to its stellar Korean programming line-up, CJ ENM’s local offices CJ ENM Hong Kong and True CJ Creations are set to present an exciting slate of Mandarin scripted series and Thai-language content respectively, bringing the best of local content to the global audience.
At the APOS breakfast event and meetings hosted by CJ ENM Hong Kong, more than 550 delegates from across the region were introduced to CJ ENM Hong Kong’s current and upcoming slate of new Korean and Mandarin productions and the plans for Thai-language content from True CJ Creations.
Currently airing the same time as Korea via tvN Asia is the star-studded Korean variety Young Actors’ Retreat which boosts a cast of popular top actors in Korea. Cannes Film Festival (2022) winning film Decision to Leave and smash hit Confidential Assignment 2, which recently surpassed six million movie-goers at the Korean box office, will soon premiere on tvN Movies.
Riding high on the wave of its latest Thai series Bad Guys which leapt to the #1 spot on Netflix, True CJ Creations will continue its positioning in global IP premium production by the announcement of the next five new projects in a row. These Thai-language series will be based on the following big-hit series from Korea – 23:23 (Signal), Good Doctor, Start-Up, Familiar Wife and Emergency Couple. True CJ Creations aims not only to remake Korean Hit IPs, but also to develop its own Original content with global and local creators.
Hot on the heels of the success of CJ ENM Hong Kong’s first Mandarin scripted series Mum, Don’t Do That!, the company also sparked interest with three new streaming-first Mandarin local language mini-series on its upcoming slate – Venus On Mars, Deep End and Hungry Souls, which are co-developed with Singapore content creators as part of the partnership with Singapore government’s InfoComm Media Development Authority (IMDA).
Venus On Mars, directed by award-winning filmmaker and showrunner Chai Yee Wei and produced by Mocha Chai Laboratories headed by Michelle Chang and Taiwanese producer, Phil Tang, GM of Greener Grass Productions and Monomyth Films, is a fantasy romance series about an undergraduate student who is accidentally transported into a parallel world where there are only men.
A psychological thriller centered on the online cyber-crime in Asia, Deep End follows a talented but troubled police officer who plunges into the dark world of cybersex crime. Executive produced by Fran Borgia and directed by Yeo Siew Hua and K. Rajagopal, this series from Akanga Film Asia exposes the alarming ideologies that are manifested in a world being shaped by technology.
Produced by Singapore’s Zhao Wei Films and helmed by Singapore director and producer Eric Khoo, Hungry Souls follows the tale of a young catering chef with the ability to see ghosts. Fate eventually finds him captured by the allure of a beautiful spirit, brewing up a story of love and death, past and present. The mini-series is directed by Meng Ong and Caleb Huang.
