Axle Sports and eGG Network’s E1 Championship wins The Clutch at ESI Singapore 2022, the Ultimate Sports Industry Showcase, which took place from 6 – 7 July. The Clutch is Esports Insider’s (ESI) pitch investment competition and was born at ESI London 2019 with the aim of helping esports-related start-up companies in need of funding and/or mentorship.
The first APAC edition of The Clutch, held in partnership with Enjinstarter and Bird & Bird, has become a focal point of ESI Events with ESI Singapore hosting the sixth iteration this year.
The panel of judges comprised of industry experts and seasoned entrepreneurs and investors in esports namely Jane Guo, VP of Analytics & Insight, ONE Esports; Samson Oh, CEO of GosuGamers and RareSpawn Ventures; Simon Nichols, Co-Founder and Managing Partner, The Wolfpack Fund Management; Melvin Kuek, Senior Advisor, Global Esports Federation and Joseph Khan, Chief Operating Officer, EnjinStarter.
Presenting E1 Championship’s pitch was Alex Yoong, founder and CEO of Axle Sports who came out on top against two other finalists Zenway Productions and EMERGE Esports.
“We are truly honoured to win the inaugural APAC edition of The Clutch. It was great that the judges understood and believed in our vision of virtual-to-reality, where we train the best sim racers to become real-life drivers. But more importantly, we hope that this will provide E1 the jump-start it needs to become a global competition,” said Alex Yoong.
Nicholas John, Head of Sports, Astro said, “We’re glad to work with like-minded partners and believe that E1 is more than a championship with great potential of discovering more talented drivers and expanding its fanbase. We look forward to engaging fans with on-ground events in the next season to further grow E1.”
The Clutch judge, Joseph Khan, COO of Enjinstarter said, “E1’s presentation during the pitch struck a chord with the judges, and delivered to us more than just a vision. We recognised the key deliverables and the positive impact it would have on the industry. Most importantly, we aligned with the passion from the founder himself. The project is indeed forward-thinking, and we believe that there is room to grow this idea further. We’re looking forward to see how the team will continue to build the business and steer it in the right direction.”
