BBC Studios, Disney+ Hotstar, and Screenplay Films announced a creative collaboration that will see Doctor Foster adapted for an Indonesian audience.
Produced by Screenplay Films for Disney+ Hotstar, Doctor Foster is a story of a trusted doctor whose life implodes when she uncovers her husband’s infidelity. The show title in Indonesia will be Mendua (Between Two Hearts). With acclaimed director Pritagita Arianegara (Surga yang Tak Dirindukan 3) at the helm, Mendua will feature award-winning actress Adinia Wirasti (Critical Eleven) starring in the lead role of Dr. Sekar M. Atmajaya, Chicco Jerikho (Foxtrox Six) playing her husband Ivan, and Tatjana Saphira (Sweet Twenty) in the role of Bella.
Indonesia is the latest market to adapt BAFTA award-winning Doctor Foster which was originally written and created by Mike Bartlett and produced by Drama Republic for BBC One.
Production on the 8 x 45’ Indonesian adaptation is underway with Wicky V. Olindo (Gundala) producing, Anthony Buncio as Executive Producer/showrunner, and Thaleb Wahjudi as co-producer. The local adaptation has been developed by Keke Mayang, Sinar Ayu Massie, and Dono Indarto. The series is set to stream exclusively on Disney+ Hotstar later this year.
Izham Omar, Southeast Asia Head of Content & Creative, The Walt Disney Company said, “We’re thrilled to welcome ‘Mendua’ to our ever-expanding content slate. It’s a gripping story of betrayal and revenge that will capture and engage local audiences. We see great potential in the creative community here to adapt this award-winning series and will continue to bring quality storytelling to audiences in Indonesia.”
André Renaud, SVP Global Format Sales for BBC Studios said: “Mike Bartlett and Drama Republic produced such an extraordinary character and story with Doctor Foster that our international customers continue to be inspired and find new ways of telling this story for a local audience. Screenplay Films’ interpretation will bring new characters and a new approach to the story whilst keeping the core themes at its heart. I am certain it will keep Disney+ Hotstar subscribers gripped.”
Wicky V. Olindo, Producer for Screenplay Films appreciated the opportunity. “We are thrilled and honored to be producing the official Indonesian adaptation of this mega hit BBC scripted format. From the get-go our main intent was to produce the best local adaptation that elevates and challenges the conventional approach to drama series production in the country. We are grateful to BBC Studios, Drama Republic, and Disney+ Hotstar for trusting and supporting our vision.”
Executive Producer and showrunner Anthony Buncio added, “I feel the themes explored in our series will resonate well with the local audience and genuinely capture the modern Indonesian family life. Our main character Sekar realizes the causal effect to her marriage of being the breadwinner and no matter the adversity, learns to deal with all her issues. We also show the other side of the coin and reveal layers of other characters that have never been seen on previous versions.”
A Thai adaptation of Doctor Foster is in production and a Filipino version is currently on its 50th episode and wowing audiences and critics alike. Known locally in Korea as The World of the Married the series is the country’s highest-rated drama in cable TV history.
