Portraying independent, honest and vulnerable characters that are not an age-bound representation of women in films and shows have come a long way, especially with the advent of OTT.  From Taapsee Pannu portraying the character of a national-level athlete in Rashmi Rocket to Bhagyashree Milind playing the role of one of the first female doctors in Marathi biography drama Anandi Gopal, and to women taking up intense characters like that of a detective in Churails, women are seen taking charge. Rashmi Rocket (Hindi)

This Original film narrates the inspiring story of a small-town girl, who overcomes all societal barriers to become a national-level athlete. Still, her glory is hindered when she is asked to undergo a gender test. Starring Taapsee Pannu, Priyanshu Painyuli, Abhishek Bannerjee, and Supriya Pathak, Rashmi Rocket, directed by Akarsh Khurana, is a sports drama inspired by true events.

Kaun Banegi Shikharwati (Hindi)

A former king, who has a dysfunctional family, devises an outlandish plan to unite his estranged daughters. Meanwhile, an income tax investigation looms over the palace’s hidden treasure. Helmed by Gauravv Chawla and Ananya Banerjee, the film is led by Soha Ali Khan, Lara Dutta Bhupathi,  Kritika Kamra, Anya Singh and Naseeruddin Shah.

Mithya (Hindi)

A tale of two women who are at odds with each other over allegations of plagiarism, which sparks a series of hostilities and shocking revelations spun around a murder for which they both are suspects. The series, directed by Rohan Sippy, is led by Huma Qureshi and Avantika Dassani. 

Rang De (Telugu)

Arjun despises his neighbour Anu. But circumstances drive the two to get married. Will Arjun’s hatred for Anu ruin their marriage, or will love blossom between the two? Directed by Venky Atluri, Rang De is packed with an ensembling cast, including Keerthy Suresh, Nithiin, and Vennela Kishore.

Prathi Poovankozhi (Malayalam)

Prathi Poovankozhi is a 2019 Malayalam thriller drama movie directed by Rosshan Andrrews, starring Manju Warrier, Saiju Kurup and Anusree. When Madhuri (played by Manju Warrier) gets assaulted by a local rowdy, Antappan, she decides to teach him a lesson despite Rang De is directed limited moral and financial support. 

Kamali from Nadukkaveri (Tamil)

Kamali, a young, mischievous village girl, convinces her father to allow her to pursue her higher studies at a prestigious institute, inspiring other young children from her village. Rajasekar Duraisamy’s film is led by Anandhi, Rohit Suresh Saraf, and Pratap Pothen.

Nerkonda Paaravi (Tamil)

Nerkonda Paarvai is a 2019 Tamil drama movie starring Ajith Kumar, Shraddha Srinath, Abhirami and Rangaraj Pandey, and is based on the Hindi movie Pink. It’s one of the most powerful, is one the most powerful, socially relevant films, reflecting on the archaic mindset of our patriarchal society and how it views independent women. Meera refuses Adhik’s untoward advances at a party and ends up hurting him in self-defence. In an attempt to defame her and get his revenge, Adhik files an FIR against Meera and her friends, terming them sex workers. It is now upon defence lawyer Bharath to fight for the girls’ honour, and get their names cleared.

Anandi Gopal (Marathi)

Anandi Gopal is a 2019 Marathi biography drama movie starringLalit Prabhakar and Bhagyashree Milind. The story, directed by Sameer Vidwans, revolves around the life and journey of Anandibai Gopalrao Joshi, one of the first Indian female doctors. 

200 Halla Ho (Hindi & Marathi)

Inspired by true events, this Original film narrates the powerful tale of 200 women who jolt the nation out of its indifference towards years of caste oppression and injustice. Starring Rinku Rajguru, Barun Sobti, and Amol Palekar in lead roles, 200 Halla Ho is directed by Sarthak Dasgupta.

Kaali (Bengali)
