Captivating dramas and movies featuring all-star casts
No year-end season is complete without a feel-good romantic comedy series. Enter Secret Royal Inspector & Joy, starring Taecyeon as Ra Yi Eon, a young man who dreams of an easy-going life in the Joseon era. He unwittingly becomes an undercover official, whose job is to expose corruption. He still maintains his easy-going life, till he meets Kim Jo Yi (Kim Hye Yoon), a progressive and determined young woman. They work together to solve cases, discovering truths and uncovering corruption in society.
Another romance drama we’ve all been waiting for is Viu Original series Now We Are Breaking Up, starring the queen of K-drama Song Hye Gyo. In a story about love and breakup, the drama follows the life of Ha Young Eun (Song Hye Gyo), a beautiful and hardworking realist who prioritises stability above all else. She meets Yoon Jae Gook (Jang Ki Yong), a rich freelancer photographer with a contrasting personality – and sparks fly.
If you’re in the mood for melodramas, indulge in The Red Sleeve, a royal court romance between a young prince (Lee Jun Ho) and court lady (Lee Se Young). Based on the novel of the same name, young prince Yi San is next in line to take over the throne once his ruthless grandfather dies. He meets Seong Deok Im, a court lady and falls in love with her. He tries to convince her to be his official concubine, but the strongwilled and free-spirited Deok Im refuses, knowing that it would restrict her freedom.
Another drama worth checking out is Melancholia, which tells the story of scandals and corruption in private high schools in Gangnam. Mathematics teacher Ji Yoon Soo (Lim Soo Jung) is fired after being accused of a teacher-student relationship with the troubled but gifted student, Baek Seung Yoo (Lee Do Hyun). Years later, Yoon Soo and Seung Yoo meet again as adults to reveal the corruption in school and for Yoon Soo to regain her reputation as a teacher.
Switch things up with heart-pumping thrillers, starting with One Ordinary Day, streaming exclusively on Viu. A remake of the award-winning British television drama Criminal Justice, it stars the enigmatic Kim Soo Hyun as Kim Hyun Soo, a university student who unexpectedly becomes the key suspect of a murder case. His only hope is Shin Joong Han (Cha Seung Won), a third-rate lawyer who barely manages to pass the bar exam. The premise of Happiness, starring Park Hyun Sik and Han Hyo Joo, is eerily familiar – it is an apocalyptic thriller set in the near future where infectious diseases are the new normal. A new deadly virus spreads within the city and a new high-rise apartment is sealed off, leaving the residents struggling to survive.
For a thrilling movie night with friends, The Outlaws would be right up your alley. The third highest-grossing film in South Korea in the year of its release, it’s based on a true story about a turf war in the Chinatown area of Seoul as two Chinese-Korean gangs battle over the neighborhood.
If you’re looking for more lighthearted action, there is Seondal: The Man Who Sells the River. This historical action-comedy is based on an ancient novel of satire about Kim Seon-dal who sold off the Taedong river. In their adaption, Kim Seon-dal is a crafty swindler with seductive good looks who joins forces with a well-known team of thieves to steal tobacco – a prized and valuable product.
