Leading independent distributor All3Media International has signed a raft of new deals for Too Close, from Snowed-In Productions, as key broadcasters in Asia, Australia and Europe secure the three-part psychological thriller which recently aired to ratings success and critical acclaim on ITV 1.
Following multiple deals, Too Close is now set to air worldwide. In Europe, new deals have been agreed with NPO (Netherlands), YLE (Finland), DR (Denmark), VRT (Flemish Belgium) and Nova TV (Greece and Cyprus), whilst BBC Studios ANZ has secured rights for Australia and New Zealand. Two pan territory acquisitions have also taken place, with HBO Central Europe signing rights for countries in central Europe and the Balkans, and BBC Studios Asia securing rights across Asia for BBC First, BBC’s premium drama SVOD service.
These latest acquisitions follow the recently announced AMC Networks deal, which will see Too Close launching exclusively in the US as an AMC+ original in May. The drama will be available on the AMC+ streaming service in the US, Canada, South America (excluding Brazil), Central America, Portugal and Spain later this year.
Starring BAFTA winner and Academy Award, Golden Globe and Primetime Emmy nominee Emily Watson (Chernobyl, Appropriate Adult) and Olivier winner Denise Gough (Paula, Monday), Too Close is a powerful story of the unfolding relationship between forensic psychiatrist (Emily Watson) and her patient (Denise Gough) as Watson’s character seeks to find an explanation for the shocking actions of her patient (Gough), prior to trial. Their therapy sessions together become a complex psychological game with confusing and emotional undercurrents.
On its ITV debut, Too Close ranked first in its time slot, averaging 4.8 million viewers with a 20.6% share*.
Louise Pedersen, CEO at All3Media International, commented, “The global appetite for premium drama continues to be strong and we’re excited to be able to introduce our clients to this gripping new thriller. Too Close is packed with acclaimed talent on- and off-screen, led by the incredible Emily Watson and immensely talented Denise Gough. Executive Producer Ruth Kenley-Letts is an expert in bringing powerful female-led stories to screen – our international success with Snowed-In Productions’ Mrs Wilson is testament to that – so we know this new primetime drama will be a must-see with audiences worldwide.”
Produced by Snowed-In Productions for ITV in association with All3Media International, Too Close is based on the novel of the same name by Clara Salaman (written under the pseudonym Natalie Daniels). Academy Award and BAFTA winner Ruth Kenley-Letts (Mrs Wilson, Franz Kafka’s It’s a Wonderful Life, Strike), CEO of Snowed-In Productions, is executive producer.
Too Close stars Emily Watson as Dr Emma Robinson, a dedicated forensic psychiatrist. Emma is not easily shocked – she’s worked with her fair share of high-security patients – until she is sent to assess Connie, played by Olivier Award winner Denise Gough who is facing trial for a terrible crime.
Can Emma find out what happened on the night of this crime? Or what happened to turn Connie into a monster? How does her beautiful friend Ness fit into it? And why does Connie’s husband refuse to see her? As Emma attempts to make sense of it all, Connie starts to show a searing insight into Emma’s deepest insecurities and begins to brutally exploit them. Their sessions become a complex psychological game with confusing and emotional undercurrents. Emma tries to uncover the truth and learn what triggered Connie’s despicable behaviour, but it seems that her attempts to see justice done may destroy her instead.
