Beta Film has secured a number of deals for the Movistar+ original series by acclaimed show runner-duo Álex Pina and Esther Martínez Lobato (Casa de Papel/ Money Heist). The romantic thriller, locally known as El Embarcadero, airs shortly after its national premiere last week in Spain on channels and platforms across Europe and Asia.
Starring Money Heist’s Alvaro Morte and produced in collaboration with Atresmedia Studios and Vancouver Media, The Pier airs on Belgium’s Telenet, Ziggo in Netherlands and HOT in Israel. While Yandex will bring the show to Russia, Ukraine, Georgia and all of CIS, Blue TV carries it in Turkey and HBO will be airing the eight-hour emotional thriller throughout Scandinavia and Eastern Europe as well as in Portugal.
The Pier celebrated its world premiere last fall at MIPCOM in Cannes, immediately establishing itself as one of the trade’s favourite cherry pick in a series market often dominated or even quenched by the usual global platform players. The Movistar+/Telefonica series’ second season is already in post-production.
The Pier, set in Valencia and the surrounding spectacular Albufera National Park, is the story of high-profile architect Alexandra who, though already shattered by the suicide of her husband Oscar, is even more devastated when she finds he had been leading a double life with another woman, Veronica, and their child. Knowing she will either go insane or get to the bottom of the mystery, Alex takes on a false identity and moves in with Veronica to find out why Oscar lived this lie. With a local police man’s help, Alex delves into the secrets Oscar kept; soon leading her to question who is friend and who is foe.
Alongside Alvaro Morte The Pier stars Verónica Sánchez (Morocco) and Irene Arcos (Vis a Vis), with Jesús Colmenar and Alex Rodrigo directing. The Pier is produced by Movistar+ in collaboration with Atresmedia Studios and Vancouver Media. Beta Film handles world sales.
