Rise, a Women in Broadcast group, launches in Asia

June 20, 2018 by TVA Editor

SINGAPORE – Rise, a group for women in non-craft roles in the broadcast sector, has announced its launch in Asia, together with details on a panel session being held at this year’s BroadcastAsia exhibition.

Women In Broadcast: Break into the Media-tech Industry and Climb the Glass Ladder is one of the panel sessions at the three day annual meet. The session will be moderated by Sadie Groom, Founder of Rise and Managing Director of Bubble Agency.

Rise, a not-for-profit group, aims to raise the profile of women within the broadcast technology and services sector and increase female representation in the workforce. According to Rise’s survey conducted in 2017, 69 percent of respondents said that females take up less than a quarter of the total number of employees in their companies.

In Asia, Rise is led by Bea Alonso, who is the Director of Global Product Marketing at Ooyala. Rise in Asia takes on a targeted approach to close the gender diversity gap in the region. According to Deloitte, Asia lags in gender diversity – only eight percent of board seats are held by women.

With the video and content landscape rapidly evolving, the need to assess and hire talents, based on experience and not gender is extremely vital to gaining a richer understanding of consumers’ viewing demands.

“Although the issue of gender diversity transcends across all sectors and geographies, the broadcast industry is predominantly male. We also understand from our survey respondents that the majority (70 percent) of them feel working practices could be improved for women in their company,” said Bea Alonso, Rise’s representative for Asia.

“By setting up this group in Asia, I believe Rise will be able to lend a better support for the group of women professionals in the region. Not only do we want to provide a voice for the women in the broadcast technology and services sector, Rise will also serve as a platform for these women, where they could network and share their experiences or ideas that would ultimately elevate their work performance,” said Sadie Groom, Founder of Rise.

The BroadcastAsia session will take place on Wednesday 27th June at the Suntec Convention Centre. Panelists include:

  • Anne Li, Business Analyst, Turner Broadcasting System
  • Bea Alonso, Director of Global Product Marketing, Ooyala
  • Debbie Lee, Founder & Chief Executive Officer, Tech Storm
  • Lin Shu Fen, Co-founder, Gluu Life and former Vice President, Entertainment & SmartLife, StarHub
  • Shalu Wasu, Managing Director, Eleven Sports Asia

As firm believers of gender diversity and inclusivity at the workplace, companies like Avid, Ooyala, and Telstra are supporting Rise’s Asia initiative to promote a diverse workforce in the broadcast industry.

Membership to Rise is free and is open to men and women. More details are available on risewib.com.
