Cyber-security in satellite operations

May 25, 2017 by TVA Editor

Singapore – Every year, CommunicAsia hosts its annual SatComm event, where Asia’s largest gathering of satellite communications companies come together to showcase their latest technology and discuss current and future industry trends and challenges. With the Cybersecurity Market Report predicting that worldwide spending on cyber security will top US$1 trillion for the five-year period from 2017 to 2021, this year’s event is set to put a spotlight on cyber-security in satellite operations.

“The Internet of Things and its rapid growth has created immense opportunities for satellite and teleport operators, which in turn has created more security risks,” said Victor Wong, Project Director for Communications Events at organiser UBM SES. “However, satellite solutions remain a reliable and secure way to transmit information and we look forward to seeing the latest technologies our exhibitors will bring toSatComm.”

Exhibiting at SatComm will be Eutelsat Communications – a French-based leading satellite operator. Jean-Francois Fenech, CEO of Eutelsat Asia, said, “SatComm/CommunicAsia is an invaluable networking platform for Eutelsat, an opportunity to show our solutions for Asia-Pacific and global connectivity, and to take the pulse of the region’s vibrant communications landscape. It’s also a valuable place to discuss emerging trends and challenges in the industry, such as cyber security, and how to address and prepare for these.”

In addition to cyber-security technology, other major focus areas at SatComm2017 – which will take place May 23-25 on Level 1 of the Marina Bay Sands in Singapore –will include satellite solutions that will enable upcoming technologies such as 4K or even 8K in Asia and IoT to support smart city developments; the promise of High Throughput Satellites (HTSs) and their commercial value; the LEO-GEO Link and the commercialisation of the 78-Satellite constellation; growing VSAT potential and cellular backhaul capabilities; growth opportunities in IoTand M2M Market and how this will revamp the role of the satellite industry; and the role of IP and hybrid networks in the evolution of the satellite industry.

Newtec – a specialist in designing, developing and manufacturing equipment and technologies for satellite communications – which has exhibited at CommunicAsia for decades, will be attending the show again this yearas well. The company’s CEO Thomas Van den Driessche will take part in a key panel session moderated by Northern Sky Research (NSR) that will discuss HTS opportunities across Asia-Pacific and how operators can take advantage of them.
