Eccho Rights will be representing Maria Wern on behalf of Warner Bros. and TV4, launching a new co-operation at MipTV this April. The crime series, based on a series of novels by author Anna Jansson, has been a hit in Sweden with productions for both television and cinema since 2008. The Eccho Rights deal includes 8 episodes of the series produced by Warner Bros. in 2016, as well as a further 8 planned for production later this year.
Internationally the series has enjoyed previous success around the Nordics, as well as being a big hit on Das Erste in Germany.
“Maria Wern is one of the best known Scandinavian crime brands and we are delighted to be involved with taking it further internationally,” says Fredrik af Malmborg, Managing Director at Eccho Rights. “A classic murder mystery format, it has a lighter tone than other Scandic Noir and crime series that can often seem a little heavy for international buyers, so we see big success for this series in new territories.”
Maria Wern (Eva Röse) is a widowed detective who moves her family to the island of Gotland to enjoy a new, quieter pace of life away from Stockholm. However she soon finds that there are a number of high profile murder cases to be solved, even on this idyllic holiday island.
