CBS & Movistar+ in licensing deal

September 15, 2016 by TVA Editor

Amsterdam and Madrid – CBS Studios International and Movistar+ have announced an exclusive licensing agreement in Spain for the linear and SVOD rights to all future SHOWTIME-owned series, as well as current SHOWTIME-owned hits and select library titles.

As part of the new agreement, Movistar+ will become the official home of SHOWTIME programming in Spain, with exclusive use of the SHOWTIME brand and trademark in that territory.

The agreement will kick off with the acclaimed SHOWTIME drama, Billions, which premieres in November on Movistar Series channel, followed by the comedy drama series, I’m Dying Up Here, executive produced by Jim Carrey. Movistar+ will also be home to the much-anticipated return of Twin Peaks and the new limited drama series, Purity, starring Daniel Craig.

The Movistar+ deal builds on CBS’s global expansion strategy for SHOWTIME by distributing its acclaimed programming portfolio and prestigious brand as a bundled offering to leading media companies around the world.   Similar exclusive deals have been made over the past 18 months with Sky in Europe, Bell Media in Canada and Stan in Australia.

Pedro García Guillén, Chief Executive Officer of Movistar+ said, “At Movistar+ we always search for the best content and brands to add value to our service. For the last few years, SHOWTIME series were part of our service, but that was only the beginning. Now, we are able to build on our existing SHOWTIME programming with future SHOWTIME-owned series. We are very proud to have closed such an important deal with a brand that has proven its ability to create shows of enormous value and appeal to our Movistar Series clients.”

“SHOWTIME is quickly becoming one of the most prestigious content brands in the global marketplace,” said Armando Nuñez, President and Chief Executive Officer, CBS Studios International. “We’re excited to further expand the reach of SHOWTIME with another branded programming agreement of this scale and with a best in class partner such as Movistar+.”

Other SHOWTIME programming available on Movistar+ will include current series of The Affair, Ray Donovan, House of Lies and Penny Dreadful and select library series including Californication, Dexter and Nurse Jackie.
