Recent and upcoming developments:
MTV Asia saw strong double digit ratings growth across its markets over the past year. In December 2015, MTV released its mobile music app, MTV Trax, in Malaysia offering consumers curated music playlists featuring 100 of the hottest tracks, refreshed on users’ smartphones daily. MTV creates the most talked about live music events around the world and two are Asia productions.
The first is MTV World Stage Malaysia which has run for seven years and last year’s edition saw popular artists such as Jason Derulo, Apink and Carly Rae Jepsen perform to a record-breaking attendance of nearly 20,000 fans. The show was also broadcast on MTV Networks to an international audience of more than three-quarters of a billion households in over 160 countries.
The inaugural event, MTV Music Evolution was produced in 2015 through MTV’s collaboration with the Tourism Promotions Board of the Philippine Department of Tourism. It is a concert that brings to life the evolution of a music genre and enables young people to experience and discover how music styles and sounds have evolved over the years. Recorded live for global telecast, the first edition of MTV Music Evolution took place in Manila and showcased hip hop as the music genre.
MTV had won Best Entertainment Award (One-Off/Annual) at the Asian Television Awards for the latter in the same year. Last year, MTV increased local programming by launching MTV News, a news source consisting of bite-sized multimedia content covering music, entertainment, movies, current events, international and regional artists, and interviews for millennials around Asia. Weekly music and lifestyle show The MTV Show is another local production and currently in its fourth season.
