Seoul, Korea – Asia’s leading studio CJ Entertainment, the signature film division of major media and content company CJ E&M, says that production of the Japanese remake of Miss Granny was kicked off in September, with the release date slated for early next year.
The Japanese version of Miss Granny, or working titled Ayashii Kanojyo, is a global project jointly invested by CJ Entertainment, Nippon Television Network Corporation and Shochiku, and it will be produced by Japanese company, C&I Entertainment.
The film will be directed by Nobuo Mizuta, known for his previous works The Apology King (2013) and Maiko Haaan!!!(2007). Casting members include Mikako Tabe as well as Mitsuko Baisho, one of Japan’s leading actresses.
Miss Granny is CJ Entertainment’s representative global project, using its ‘One Source Multi-Territory’ strategy, in which one original source is made into various localized content products in order to cater to audiences in different regions. Miss Granny has already been made into the Chinese and Vietnamese versions, and CJ Entertainment also has a plan to make the film’s Thai, Indonesian, Indian and German versions in the future.
“We are focusing on localizing the film to appeal to Japanese audiences, like how we did for the Chinese. For example, we tried to put more love stories in the Chinese version titled 20, ONCE AGAIN! and used popular Chinese music for the soundtrack,” said Kini S. Kim, Executive VP and Head of International Sales and Distribution team at CJ E&M.
Meanwhile, 20, ONCE AGAIN! earned around 365 million yuan at the Chinese box office since its release in January, while Sweet 20, the Vietnamese version, is scheduled to open this December.
