Beyond Distribution announced the acquisition of Hockey Wives: Married To The Game for international launch at MIPTV. The reality documentary series follows the wives and girlfriends of some of the most celebrated and up-and-coming professional ice hockey players across North America. These women navigate the challenging lifestyles in this high stakes world with grace and humour.
The deal is Beyond’s first deal with producers Bristow Global Media, based in Toronto. The eight episode series is scheduled to premier on Corus Media’s W Network in Canada on 18 March.
Caitlin Meek-O’Connor, Head of Acquisitions for Beyond Distribution commented, “We are thrilled to start our relationship with Bristow Global Media, not only are we pleased to be working with Julie and her team, we’re also glad to launch with this exciting series from a producer with such in-depth knowledge of the sports world. We were gripped from the first episode of Hockey Wives, we love the vibrant, gutsy characters and the positive portrayal of women and friendship.”
Whether they are married to players new to the professional ranks, already superstars or nearing retirement, these women form a team of their own to support and encourage each other through personal and professional highs and lows. There may be some incredible perks to being a “hockey wife” but make no mistake, it also poses extraordinary challenges. These dynamic women must balance the grind of the regular season, long periods of separation and their partner’s injuries and formidable threat of being traded, all while raising families and building their own careers.
Founder of Bristow Global Media, Julie Bristow added, “Hockey is a universal sport that carries its own celebrity and these deeply personal stories will resonate with viewers no matter whether they follow the sport. We are delighted to be working with Beyond to share these stories with audiences around the world.”
