Hong Kong International Film and TV Market (FILMART) is Asia’s largest film market in terms of exhibitor numbers, but coming shortly before Cannes, it is a challenge to convince buyers to fork out portions of their budgets in Asia, rather than wait for the bigger European platform. However, the growing appeal of Chinese language productions makes FILMART all the more necessary to Asian buyers, and this year sees a host of newcomers among the delegates at FILMART, from Asian states like Cambodia and India and even South Africans coming in under the umbrella of an expanded pavilion.
Established markets like France, Korea, Singapore and U.S. will once again attend FILMART, which opens on 23 March and continues through 26 March at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre. This year, a record-breaking number of film companies including TVB, now TV, and Radio Television Hong Kong, will participate in FILMART, with enlarged custom-built booths located at the Hong Kong exhibitors’ zone. More than 30 companies will join under the Animation and Digital Entertainment Pavilion funded by CreateHK. In addition to the list of screening venues, the newly renovated UA Cine Times (Times Square) will also host screenings to attendees this year.
FILMART will focus on the wave of reality TV shows sweeping Asia, with expert speakers from the broadcast industry examining the essential elements for creating successful reality shows and a look at the Asian film industry’s next generation. Other highlights include Locations World – a thematic feature soliciting the support from various film commissions worldwide to join this initiative in promoting location shooting and related services in respective countries and regions; Short Film Cafe – where guests invited include the Hong Kong Arts Development Council (Fresh Wave), the Hong Kong Arts Centre (ifva and New action Express), Motion Picture Association – International (HKheart) and HKBU to showcase award winning short films; and the returning Business of Intellectual Property Zone (BIP Zone) – with lawyers, auditors and other specialists providing intellectual property trading and advice on management services, including promoting the Asia IP Exchange (AsiaIPEX).
A series of thematic conferences will be organised by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC):
- Find Your Opportunities in the Media Convergence Age
- TV World 2015 International Forum: The Rise of TV Streaming – Opportunities and Challenges
- Digital Entertainment Summit: T for Transmedia: Immersive Storyworld and A New Way of Audience Engagement
In addition, FILMART will also host the 5th Hong Kong International Mobile Film Awards which will be held to recognise all outstanding mobile films.
Held in conjunction with FILMART, the 9th edition of TV World will cover different events including TV screenings, international forum and networking activities. This is a timely and unique one-stop trade platform for television and broadcasting professionals to enhance their competitiveness and explore new business opportunities in the region. Presenting more than 300 exhibitors from around the world – which includes TVB, CCTV from the Chinese mainland, Public Television from Taiwan, Tokyo Broadcasting System Television (TBS) from Japan and Fairchild Television from Canada, and more – the theme ‘The Rise of TV Streaming’ focuses on strategies in creating spin-off opportunities and tackling the possible challenges. Industry luminaries will share their insights and offer expert tips.
FILMART also highlights Business Forum of HK Asian-Pop Music Festival (HKAMF) which will be held on 26 March. The forum discusses the music market in Asia with surging digital platforms. Those attending will hear from industry professional presenting the latest trends and business opportunities for the music sector. The HK Asian-Pop Music Festival will be held on 27 March.
FILMART is also part of Entertainment Expo Hong Kong (EE 2015). Celebrating its 11th anniversary this year, Asia’s leading entertainment industry gathering presents multimedia events showcasing film, television, digital entertainment and music. EE 2015 will continue the strategy to reach out to public, draw local support and encourage public direct participation. The opening ceremony will be held on 23 March.
