Singapore – From 10 January, audiences in Singapore will be treated to a new entertainment channel which will be the nation’s first Tamil Subscription Video On Demand (SVOD) channel. Varnam (StarHub TV Channel 168) will offer viewers a mix of genres comprising movies, awards presentations, dramas, and reality programmes. Being an On Demand Channel, viewers will be able to catch their preferred programmes anytime they desire.
Delivered in Tamil, programmes on Varnam will come with English subtitles to enable audiences across Singapore to enjoy the content. Varnam will join the bouquet of Tamil channels that is currently available on StarHub TV, bringing the total number of Tamil channels to seven. The other six channels which offer round-the-clock scheduled programming are Sun TV (Channel 133), Sun Music (Channel 134), Vijay (Channel 135), Vannathirai (Channel 136), V Thamizh (Channel 137) and Zee Tamizh (Channel 138).
Programmes on Varnam include SIIMA 2014, an awards ceremony which saw the best South Indian movie stars gather in Kuala Lumpur for the first time; Anjaan, a 2014 action-packed blockbuster movie which stars popular actor Suriya; and Velaiyilla Pattathari, a poignant movie about an unemployed engineer who finds it difficult to find a job which he loves, but overcomes odds to find success. To enhance the line-up with a Singapore flavour, locally-produced programmes will be added to Varnam progressively.
“With an increasing demand for greater viewing flexibility, Varnam will not only entertain Tamil audiences anytime they desire, but also give them the choice of enjoying Varnam as part of the Thangam Migai pack at no additional cost, or on a standalone basis,” said Lee Soo Hui, Head of Media Business Unit, StarHub. “Delivering a good mix of the latest Masala movies, fun variety programmes and intriguing drama series, Varnam will be a welcome entertainment option for our Tamil customers.”
