Tokyo – During the second half of FY2014, NHK World TV – NHK’s international broadcasting service in English – will bring in a wider variety of programmes. As a trial attempt, they will air shows during more convenient hours for viewers around the world under the new programming.

Saturdays 1:10 ~ 2:00 p.m. (JST) etc. (4 times daily)
NHK World TV will introduce new genres and production approaches to cater for various viewer interests.
Programmes offered include major news features and debates, documentaries co-produced with foreign directors active in Japan and Asia, entertainment programmes including dramas, and regional programmes presented in English.

The first in a series of documentaries depicting Japan by foreign directors living in the country. Luis Patrón from Mexico, who has lived in Japan for 12 years, closely covers a family in Mie Prefecture in western Japan; three generations of female divers. Much like other small communities in Japanese countryside, their fishing village has experienced a declining and aging population. Showing underwater footage, this documentary focuses the family’s positive outlook on keeping the traditional way of living.
ABU Asia Children’s Drama Co-Production Series 2014

Children of 7 to 9 years old play leading roles in this 15-minute drama series, produced by member broadcasting organisations of the Asia-Pacific Broadcasting Union (ABU). The channel will air three episodes created by Mongolia, Brunei, and Japan.

Broadcast daily around 8pm U.S. Eastern Time, these programmes mainly target business people in the U.S. We will air documentary programmes about Japan and Asia, along with NHK Special series.

Shima Kosaku’s Asian Entrepreneurs
Documentary programmes focused on the state of Asian economy through biographies of charismatic entrepreneurs.

Broadcast daily in the prime time slot in the Americas, Europe and Southeast Asia respectively. Programmes promote Japan, featuring travel shows or specific Japanese cultures among others.
