MarVista green lights music docs

Los Angeles, California – MarVista Entertainment, an independent producer and distributor of features and family entertainment programming, has given EntertainMe US, LLC, the green light to produce more music specials and documentaries focusing on pop music superstars Miley Cyrus, Lady Gaga, Justin Bieber and the legendary King of Pop, Michael Jackson. The new productions were announced on March 13 by MarVista Entertainment Vanessa Shapiro, EVP Sales.

“Music documentaries and specials, especially those focusing on artists who are currently on the charts and on tour, are really delivering the coveted 18 to 34 demo that so many of today’s international programme buyers are targeting,” said Shapiro. “These new productions from EntertainMe continue MarVista’s commitment to providing its clients with the highest quality, topical content for today and in the future.”

Beyoncé: Beyond the Glam

Fuelled by programme buyers’ increasing demand for music specials and documentaries on today’s hottest music acts, MarVista Entertainment acquired 16 music documentaries from EntertainMe last year, including specials on One Direction, Beyoncé, Rihanna, Taylor Swift and Nicki Minaj.

Sales for these titles exceeded expectations, including the sale of the One Direction music doc to MundoFox in the U.S. (Spanish language rights), DirecTV Latin America (for U.S. Spanish language and Caribbean), Netflix (for Latin America and the Caribbean), Multimusic in Mexico and Megavision in Chile.

Netflix also picked up Latin American and Caribbean rights to Justin Bieber: The Next Chapter; Beyoncé: Beyond the Glam; Rihanna: No Regrets, Taylor Swift: From the Heart and Nicki Minaj: Pink Planet.

Among the featured titles are:

  • Justin Bieber: The Next Chapter – Documenting the meteoric rise of the worldwide pop phenomenon, The Next Chapter follows Justin Bieber’s career from being discovered by manager Scooter Braun and signed to Usher’s record label, to tearing up the charts with his evolving music style.
  • Nicki Minaj: Pink Planet – Nicki Minaj’s fast-paced rapping, alter egos and accents have made her a world class entertainer. Considered to be one of the most influential rappers of all time, Nicki, through her own words, video and live performance footage of “Superbass”, “Check it Out” and “Beez in the Trap”, among others, presents an intimate “inside” look at her life.
  • One Direction: All the Way to the Top – Follows One Direction’s fast track to stardom, from X-Factor finalists to leading the resurgence of the new ‘British Invasion’. The documentary includes interviews with the band, music industry experts, and fans from around the world.
  • Beyoncé: Beyond The Glam – Presenting the captivating story of Beyoncé’s rise to stardom and an intimate portrayal of her life as a musician, artist and businesswoman.
  • Taylor Swift: From the Heart – Characterised as ‘America’s Sweetheart’, Taylor Swift continues to tear up the charts. In this film, fans will learn how Swift emerged from a Christmas tree farm in Pennsylvania to become one of America’s biggest country and pop music artists.
  • Britney Spears: Princess of Pop – This feature chronicles Britney Spears’ tumultuous career, rocky relationships, paparazzi nightmares and a very public meltdown as well as her return to the top of the pop charts.
  • Rihanna: No Regrets – This film looks at the often controversial life of one of world’s most influential singers, including her love-hate relationship with Chris Brown. The film features interviews with fans, industry experts, and the singer herself and includes rare archive footage and music videos from a selection of her greatest hits.
  • Eminem: Behind the Lyrics – This documentary provides an intimate look at the colourful life and career of rapper, record producer and songwriter Eminem, who has sold over 100 million albums worldwide and is regarded as one of the best-selling artists in the world.
  • Madonna: Goddess of Pop – This engaging documentary looks at the longstanding career of Madonna as a singer, songwriter, dancer, actress and media entrepreneur, including her amazing ability to continually reinvent her public persona.
  • Whitney Houston: The Greatest Love of All – Famous for her extraordinary vocal range and uncanny ability to reach the emotional core of a song, Whitney Houston brought an unparalleled sense of drama to Top 40 radio during the 1980s and 90s. This documentary pays tribute to that magnificent body of work and takes a closer look at the woman who brought it to life.
