Hong Kong/Shanghai – PCCW Global, an operating division of HKT, and Shanghai Media Group (SMG), a major television broadcaster and content provider in Mainland China, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to jointly explore media transmission and distribution opportunities.
PCCW Global operates a global television channel transmission network (GTVN) via its fiber, IP and satellite networks which cover more than 1,800 cities and 120 countries worldwide. SMG operates a television broadcasting transmission network covering the majority of Shanghai and connecting to major domestic television broadcasters in different provinces. PCCW Global and SMG will interconnect their respective media transmission networks in order to send media content into and out of Mainland China. PCCW Global will aggregate media content to overseas markets via its GTVN platform, providing SMG and other local media producers with new business opportunities and international exposure. The collaboration will also enable PCCW Global to extend its GTVN platform and will further enhance its global media distribution capabilities.
Mr. Stephen Pang, PCCW Global’s Senior Vice President, Asia & CIS, said, “It is our great honor to collaborate with SMG, a prestigious broadcaster in China via this project. This collaboration offers the perfect opportunity for us to reach out to the Chinese market and to enhance our capabilities to better support international content producers and broadcasters.”
Mr. Wang Jiangqiang, Deputy Head of Radio and Television Shanghai, said, “As a leading player in the world, PCCW Global operates a mature and extensive transmission network with a strong track record in media content transmission. Following the integration of telecommunications, broadcasting and Internet networks in mainland China, which has ushered in a new era in media content distribution, we look forward to building such a partnership which, we believe, represents a positive collaboration between two strong players in the industry.”
