According to Macau Daily News, after the Court of Second Instance ruled that the Bureau of Telecommunication Regulations (DSRT) has 90 days to stop public antenna companies from airing “the illegal retransmission of TV signals”, the Chief Executive reassured the public that the government would execute and follow the law. He added that “some time should be given to the authorities to do the work”. Meanwhile, in response to public concern, public antenna companies have stressed that there will not be a TV signal blackout. The report adds that the public antenna companies’ representative, Yung Ka Ki, guaranteed that the public would be able to continue to watch TV programmes. But he did not specify how many of the existing channels and programmes aired by the antenna companies would remain free-to-air for the public and did not elaborate as to how they would relay TV signals.
Post-ruling, CE Sai On Chui said that he has already instructed the Secretary for Lands and Public Works, Lau Si Io, to ensure that DSRT will “strictly implement” relevant decisions made by the court. He add that he understood that some members of the public were concerned that they might not be able to watch the existing TV channels and programs but he stressed that respect for the law should be prioritised.
For the time being, the Bureau has promised to handle the issue within 90 days of the ruling, as ordered by the court. However, DSRT head Tou Veng Keong did not specify whether public antenna companies would continue to be able to transmit or relay TV signals, nor did he address the possibility of a TV blackout.
