Pop Toon
Paris – A year after launching its Pop Toon quest to track down short-format, dialogue-free cartoons around the world from every period of animation history, Novovision has now brought this material together into 104 22-minute shows, which will be presented to buyers at next month’s MIPTV.
These cartoons, acquired by Novovision from numerous territories, feature characters from the golden age of animation, like Casper, Betty Boop, Popeye, Looney Tunes favourites Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck and Porky Pig, and the first Superman films, plus recent 3D animations such as Sweet Lambs, Cook and Cheep and Pozaman.
“At MIPCOM 2011, several clients asked me if it would be possible to come up with compilations of the best vintage and contemporary non-verbal animations, in the same vein as dialogue-free shows like Pop Corn TV,” explained François-Xavier Poirier, President of Novovision. “Drawing on the success of Pop Corn, broadcast in 145 countries on 247 channels, we decided to take up the challenge. Over the course of a full year, we went out in search of animation treasures.”
As a result, Novovision offered 25 installments of Pop Toon at MIPCOM 2012, then a further 50 at the last NATPE market. At MIPTV in April 2013, buyers will have a choice of 104 shows of 22 minutes. Twenty-three pre-buys have already been signed.
While the Pop Toon shows currently on offer are specifically aimed at a young audience aged 6-12, Novovision has also met strong demand from clients for preschool programming. To satisfy this demand, a new selection has been put together, with 13 Pop Toon shows of 22 minutes aimed at toddlers. These will be available soon after MIPTV.
And in a break with its traditional editorial line, Novovision will also be offering a selection of 25 x 22-minute Pop Toon shows with dialogue.
