The 17th Asian Television Awards, organised by Contineo Media and official publication Television Asia Plus, was held on December 6, 2012 at the Shangri-La, Singapore.
The big winners for the night were Korean Broadcasting System (KBS) and International Channel Shanghai (ICS), SMG, collectively clinching the top four awards.
The awards event was attended by some 400 industry professionals from across Asia, including channel heads, programming execs, creative talent and on-screen personalities.
With 1,327 entries representing 13 Asian nations, including nearly 50 new entrants, ATA 2012 ranks as one of the most widely
participated television competition this region has seen in 17 years. Three new awards – 2D animation, 3D animation, and a sports presenter award – brought the tally of trophies up-for-grabs to 38, not including the coveted final four awards:
TERRESTRIAL CHANNEL OF THE YEAR, TERRESTRIAL BROACASTER OF THE YEAR, CABLE & SATELLITE CHANNEL OF THE YEAR, CABLE & SATELLITE NETWORK OF THE YEAR.
Read what some of this year’s ATA winners have to say:
Korean Broadcasting System (KBS)
Terrestrial Channel of the Year – KBS 2TV
Terrestrial Broadcaster of the Year – KBS
Best Comedy Programme – Gag Concert – 600th Episode Special
Best Drama Series – The Princess’ Man
Soo Min, Seh, Chief Producer, Entertainment, KBS: “We are very, very excited and happy to have won these awards. Maybe it’s due to K-Pop music’s power and Korean dramas’ power in this region. But it is really unexpected for us. I am the Director of Gag Concert – 600th Episode Special and all I had hoped to win was the award for Best Comedy Programme. So winning that and the Terrestrial Channel and Broadcaster of the Year awards are just wonderful. KBS is now the leading broadcaster in Asia so it is a very great thing. With these prizes, from now on we should do our best even more in Asia.”
Shanghai Media Group (SMG)
Cable & Satellite Channel of the Year – International Channel Shanghai
Cable & Satellite Broadcaster of the Year – SMG
Best Adaptation of an Existing Format – The Amazing Race: China Rush (Season Two)
Best Talk Show – Culture Matters: The Tiger Mom Roars
Li Lin, Deputy Director, Vision Department, International Channel Shanghai: “I was very surprised, and two awards was in my expectation but to get four is just out of this world. So I am very very happy. It’s such an amazing moment. We got four awards tonight and I think this shows that Chinese television is developing and the quality is getting better and better. Also we get to learn from other Asian counterparts at the Asian TV Awards. We hope we can continue to improve our programming.”
Best Documentary Programme (One-off/ Special) – Discovery Networks Asia-Pacific for Taiwan Revealed: The Presidential Office
Tommy Lin, SVP & GM North Asia, Discovery Networks Asia Pacific: “Winning the Best Documentary Awards at the Asian TV Awards with Taiwan Revealed: The Presidential Office is truly an honour and recognition of our continuous effort to create compelling local content that resonates with international audiences with the support of our local partners.”
Best News Programme – Bloomberg Television for First Up
Susan Li, host: “We feel so honoured and happy to be recognised and appreciated by the Asian TV Awards. We have great viewers and fans out there so we’re just happy that we’re providing the content that people want to watch.”
Best Social Awareness Programme – AETN All Asia Networks for Junkie Monastery
Chris Humphrey, Executive Producer: “It’s fantastic for us. We always knew it was a great show, a really entertaining show. We’re delighted that it got acknowledged in the category for Best Social Awareness Programme and not only that but it got Highly Commended mentions in three other categories as well.”
Best Entertainment Presenter/Host – Oli Pettigrew for Cash Cab Asia Season 1
Oli Pettigrew: “I’ve been working for six years now as a TV host and I am actually born in Asia and I’ve got a lot of respect for television in Asia. There’s no reason that the shows we make here shouldn’t be shown in the rest of the world. To finally get some recognition from the Asian TV Awards after six years and from Asian television as a whole is such an honour for me because Asia is my home, it’s where my soul is, so I felt a sense of acceptance finally.”
Best Actress in a Leading Role – Rui En for Unriddle II
Rui En: “Thank you to the production team for giving me the opportunity and space to bring out the extremities of the role. “Hu Xiao Man” would not have existed without EP Paul Yuen and script writer Phang Kai Yee. “Hu Xiao Man” will always remain significant to me. Thank you, ATA.”
Best Comedy Performance by an Actor/Actress – Michelle Chong for The Noose Season 5
Michelle Chong: “Thank you to ATA for this prestigious award. This award means a lot to me because this could be the last time I’m appearing on The Noose. It’s a nice farewell souvenir to have.(departure from MediaCorp) And a heavy one! I also want to thank the Noose team for everything I have today. ‘Tanks Everybirdy tanks!’”
