Malaysian police recently arrested 12 individuals involved in what is considered to be the first illegal IPTV syndicate in the country.
According to The Star Online, the arrest was a joint operation with the Malaysian Communication and Multimedia Commission and CyberSecurity Malaysia, and was the result of a one-month surveillance, wherein authorities uncovered illegal provision of IPTV services. The arrest was made through five separate raids in Penang, Kedah and Perlis.
The report said the syndicate, which has been operating for a year with more than 2,000 customers already, was selling foreign television content applications illegally and had profits running into the millions. It added that a variety of foreign programmes were available through the illegal IPTV service, including five pornography channels.
