Endemol has acquired the worldwide format rights to Shaw Media’s hit series Canada Sings. Under the deal, the television and digital production company will sell the format internationally and draw on its network of production companies to produce local versions of the show in major territories around the world. The series takes ordinary people from workplaces across the nation and challenges them to form Glee clubs with their co-workers. The teams, along with professional help, compete in a head-to-head battle for their charity of choice as part of a nationwide talent contest. Originally produced by Insight Production Company Ltd., the first season of the series aired in Canada in August this year and more than 6.5 million viewers tuned in, holding its own against significant prime time competition.
