Cannes – Malaysia’s Multimedia Development Corporation (MDeC) announced that two of its MSC Malaysia-status companies have secured international co-production deals at MIPCOM 2010 to produce kids’ properties Kung Fu Chicken and Red, Yellow & Blue. Animasia Studio (Malaysia), Agogo International (Hong Kong) and Neptuno Films (Spain) will co-produce 2D animated action adventure series Kung Fu Chicken (26 x 22). Kung Fu Chicken follows the adventures of Golden Egg Securities, a kung fu-style protection agency serving the residents of Rocky Perch – an island filled with chaos, mayhem and a whole lot of birds. Their services are in great demand as the island is also home to criminal mastermind, Dr Gringo, the Pink Flamingo, who is hell-bent on getting rid of Rocky Perch’s newest heroes. But Golden Egg Securities have a secret weapon – a golden egg which bestows amazing powers on whoever possesses it, and turns Golden Egg’s owner Chuck into Kung Fu Chicken. Edmund Chan, Managing Director of Animasia Studio, says, “We see the potential for Kung Fu Chicken to succeed globally as we have very good partners on board for the project. The participation of Neptuno will strengthen our presence in Spanish speaking markets and Europe, while Agogo International will benefit us by giving the show access to Chinese speaking markets.” Ed-Online Technologies (Malaysia), Scrawl Studios (Singapore) and Bryant Whittle (UK) will co-develop and co-produce animated pre-school series Red, Yellow & Blue (52 x 11). Red, Yellow & Blue features the adventures of three brave rabbits, the Colour Squad Bunnies, in Rainbow Land where the colourless creature, Mr Dull, has invented a machine that sucks the colours out of everything. It is up to the Colour Squad Bunnies to help restore colour and order to the land. The series will focus on encouraging pre-school children to develop their artistic skills and creativity. The producers are also partnering with a publisher to produce a series of interactive e-books for the global market. It has also been announced that three MSC Malaysia-status companies have signed distribution deals for the Latin American and Hispanic market. Creative animation studio Animasia Studio, 2D and 3D animation specialist Backbone Entertainment and 3D animation experts Les’ Copaque have each agreed distribution deals with Latin Media Corporation (USA). Latin Media Corporation is working closely with its partner in Malaysia, Worldwide Rights Corporation (WRC) to promote its animation industry to the international market. The deals will see Latin Media Corporation distributing hit programmes such as ABC Monsters, Jinggo, Beanos, Garr, Sugar Pal and Upin & Ipin and Friends. Animasia Studio, Ed-Online Technologies, Backbone Entertainment and Les’ Copaque are MSC Malaysia-status companies brought to MIPCOM by MDeC, the National Film Development Corporation of Malaysia (FINAS) and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (SKMM). Kung Fu Chicken was executive produced by Edmund Chan for Animasia Studio, Steven Ching for Agogo International and Cristina Brandner for Neptuno Films. Red, Yellow & Blue was executive produced by Tan Chiang Loong for Ed-Online Technologies, Ervin Ann for Scrawl Studios and Amanda Whittle for Bryant Whittle.
