Ericsson has provided Hsin Yeong An (HYA) Cable, the Taiwanese cable operator, with a fully redundant head-end solution that enables it to offer subscribers a richer, more advanced service. The Ericsson solution will enable HYA Cable to provide consumers with increased channel choice and high definition (HD) programming. HYA Cable has deployed a range of Ericsson cable head-end solutions, including video encoders, MX8400 multiplexers, and EdgeQAM modulators. The Ericsson head-end has been integrated by the company’s Taiwan business partner, Hitron Tech. HYA Cable is encoding HD and SD channels in MPEG-4 AVC, taking advantage of the high bitrate efficiencies provided by this next-generation compression technology. The resultant bandwidth savings enable HYA Cable to roll out more advanced services for its subscribers. The company uses an IP head-end configuration, which makes it easier to connect devices onsite and reduces the cost of cabling and video transport. In addition, Ericsson has provided Star Software Technology Co. Ltd., the Chinese DTV solutions provider, with a system to enable cable video on-demand (VOD) services for operators in the Hebei province of north China. The central back office solution will enable cable operators in the region to offer their subscribers an enhanced service through the launch of VOD catalogs. This offers viewers greater choice and flexibility by enabling them to watch content whenever they want. Star has selected the OpenStream Digital Services Platform by Ericsson for the back office for cable VOD in the whole of the Hebei province.
