Project NIMS (Next Generation Interactive Multimedia, Applications and Services) Industry Dialogue Phase 1 (IDP1) has concluded and is embarking on Phase 2. A key focus for Project NIMS Phase 2 is the development of technical specifications for common featured set-top boxes (STB). The common featured STB would support greater interoperability amongst IPTV operators and enhance consumer experience. IDA and MDA invite the industry to participate and provide feedback to the NIMS Common Featured Set-Top Box Functional Requirements document. This document has incorporated relevant industry feedback from the Phase 1 participants. Industry insiders say, due to technical issues and the lack of a common standard for IPTV, it is unlikely that a single universal STB would be introduced in Singapore this year. SingTel’s acquisition of exclusive rights to BPL has caused consternation among some customers averse to having two STB’s for rival pay-TV services SingTel mio TV and StarHub TV.
