Singapore – Tokyo Broadcasting System Television Inc (TBS) and Discovery Channel Asia took top honours at the 14th Asian TV Awards 2009, held 3 December 2009 at the Pan Pacific Hotel, Singapore. Japan’s TBS was named Terrestrial Channel of the Year, having won Best Comedy for Iromonea and Best Entertainment Programme for 26 Hours/Day. Highly commended in the Terrestrial Channel of the Year category was Hong Kong’s TVB Jade. Discovery Channel, flagship brand of Discovery Networks Asia-Pacific (DNAP), was named Cable & Satellite Channel of the Year with wins for HIP Korea – rain, Revealed – Chinese New Year, and Storm Surfers. Highly commended in the Cable & Satellite Channel of the Year category was CNN International. DNAP was declared Cable & Satellite Network of the Year in 2007 and 2008; 2009 saw DNAP pick up a total of 10 wins and commendations in various categories. In previous years, top Awards were presented to the Terrestrial Network of the Year, and Cable & Satellite Network of the Year. This year, the category was changed to Terrestrial Channel of the Year and Cable & Satellite Channel of the Year – awarded to the single channel with the most points accumulated from wins or commendations for programming produced for and aired on that channel. First-time winners include: Hakka TV’s 1895 in Formosa for Best Drama Series and Easy Money for Best Single Drama or Telemovie Programme. Jon Niermann picked up Best Entertainment Presenter for Asia Uncut, West Meets East Production for Star World. Returning winners from 2008 included: Best News Presenter or Anchor, CNBC Asia Pacific’s Martin Soong for Squawk Box. From Thailand, Chusak Iamsuk picked up Best Comedy Performance By An Actor/Actress for Raberd Thurd Theung, Workpoint Entertainment Public Company Limited.
