Beijing – Tandberg Television, part of the Ericsson Group is providing its OpenStream digital services platform to Tianjin TEDA Cable TV Network Co. to offer video-on-demand (VOD) and network personal video recorder (nPVR) services. As part of the contract, Tandberg has also provided its Xport on-demand content production software system. Tianjin TEDA Cable, a state-owned organization responsible for planning, constructing, operating, and managing the cable TV network of Tianjin TEDA already provides digital cable TV services in the Tianjin TEDA (Tianjin Economic-Technological Development Area) using a Tandberg head-end and network control solution. Tianjin TEDA is a hi-tech industry zone in the northeastern part of China adjacent to Beijing and Hebei province currently building communications infrastructure that includes advanced TV and broadband services. Tandberg Television has more than five systems deployed in China and five in Europe, including UPC Netherlands and Multimedia Polska. Having been in use for a number of years in North America, the company’s OpenStream digital services platform integrates with third party products and allows Tianjin TEDA Cable to use servers, applications, billing systems, and other system components from suppliers of its choice. Its real-time ingest (RTI) system is an extension of OpenStream and enables Tianjin TEDA Cable to provide time-shifted TV services without having to install hard-drive based set-top boxes (STBs) or PVRs in customers’ homes. The RTI and catalogue solution includes enhancements to the Xport Producer encoding and OpenStream platform, facilitates deployment of nPVR services to offer broadcast programs as VOD titles.
