Singapore – SingTel and Al Jazeera have partnered to provide the Al Jazeera English channel in Singapore on the former’s IPTV service, mio TV. Al Jazeera English is the first English language global news and current affairs channel based in the Middle East and will air exclusively on mio TV channel 43 from March 1, 2008. The partnership also provides subscribers with access to the channel streamed live via 3G for mobile phones from April 2008 On the alliance, Low Ka Hoe, director of mio TV and content said, “We are extremely pleased to be the first to bring Al Jazeera to Singapore audiences…By offering Al Jazeera English on mio TV as well on mobile phones, we enable our customers to catch the latest news and programmes at any time, even when on the go.” Phil Lawrie, Al Jazeera Network’s director of global distribution said, “This is another excellent step forward in Asia, a key region in which Al Jazeera English is experiencing huge audience demand.” Al Jazeera English is currently available to more than 100 million households worldwide and targets to be the channel of reference for Middle East events. Headquartered in Doha, Qatar, Al Jazeera English has broadcast centres in Kuala Lumpur, London and Washington DC. SingTel’s mio TV is offering Al Jazeera English at S$5.35 (US$3.80) per month on a monthly basis or S$4.28 (US$3.05) per month on a yearly subscription. Al Jazeera English on live 3G streaming is available on a monthly basis at S$3.21 (US$2.30) per month or via pay-per-use access at S$0.54 (US$0.40) per access.
