Cannes – Off the Fence is looking to produce a steady stream of factual programming in Asia, mostly as co-productions, according to Tony Chow, who is heading up the producer/distributor’s new Singapore office. Chow said he is looking to work with co-production partners with a particular emphasis on Korea (with which Singapore has a co-prod treaty) and India. The focus will be primarily on natural history/wildlife and science and technology, almost always in HD, and in the budget range of $US250,000 – $300,000 per hour. Chow is hopeful that of the docs which will emanate from the just-announced alliance between NGTI, the MDA and Off the Fence, at least 50% of the work will be carried out in Singapore, utilizing local talent. Chow and Off the Fence’s Bristol-based executive Peter Venn will executive produce the first three docs that have been commissioned from Singapore-based companies; the titles are still under wraps. Chow will also get involved in selling Off the Fence’s programming in the Asian region. Noting the firm has a catalogue of more than 1,200 hours, he said, “We want to have a stronger presence and footprint in Asia.”
