Hong Kong– The Cable & Satellite Broadcasting Association of Asia (CASBAA) distributed 300 letters of awareness to Hong Kong bars, clubs and other public venues as a reminder to respect pay-TV content copyright and to inform of the seriousness in pirating satellite TV signals. Distributed ahead of the Rugby World Cup competition starting on September 7 and 4 weeks into the new English Premier League football season, the ‘awareness’ letters also encouraged bars to subscribe to pay-TV services through Hong Kong’s three licensed pay-TV operators: Hong Kong Cable, now TV and TVB Pay Vision. Print advertisements were also placed in key newspapers and magazines to increase public awareness. Unauthorized commercial display of pay-TV content at public venues, programming intended for other markets, as well as trading in pirated television decoders, are acts of copyright infringement. World Cup soccer organizer FIFA and pay-TV operators took legal action against a number of Hong Kong bars for illegal broadcasts of the World Cup football tournament in June 2006 resulting in six-figure settlement payments for copyright infringement along with public apologies.
