Beijing– Oriental Cable Network (OCN) will extend its VOD platform with Tandberg's new real time ingest (RTI) system for the Network Personal Video Recorder (nPVR). The deal follows OCN's purchase of Tandberg's OpenStream Digital Services Platform last year for its Phase I VOD deployment.
OCN's cable TV service covers Shanghai and provides over 50 channels to its subscriber base of over 4 million viewers. For OCN's Phase II VOD deployment, it will use the new Tandberg system to provide time-shifted television services (capabilities such as rewinding a TV programme as it's being broadcast live) without having customers install hard-drive based set-top boxes (STBs) or PVRs.
Tandberg's new system enables multiple broadcast channels to be ingested in real time into the VOD system and can support additional STBs with a software upgrade. The nPVR system includes Xport Producer/Recorder/Slicer with new software to support programme selection and automatic CableLabs 1.1 compliant metadata, together with Tandberg E5710 MPEG–2 encoders and TT1260 professional receivers. The system was launched in Asia at the CCBN exhibition held in Beijing from March 30 – April 1.
