How does one impress at the 50th MIPTV? One can fly in a Peking Opera troop to promote a doc on the celebrated art form, as CCTV did; one can pay tribute to 50 years of television, as Reed MIDEM did at their opening bash, with a dance number featuring popular TV themes – I cracked up when two dancers (both men!) attempted an iconic Time-of-my-life pose ala Patrick Swayze-Jennifer Grey; or one can simply hand out cash on the Palais floor, as Global Agency did (I kid you not). The Turkish … [Read more...] about Window Shopping

Re-invention.
Re-invention seems to be the key word for many factual channels we speak to. Just look at the two news channels featured in this issue. In January, BBC World News begun news broadcasts from a stateof- the-art HD-ready facility in Central London, while closer to home, MediaCorp’s Channel NewsAsia opened a new studio in the heart of Singapore’s financial centre to strategically report business news from where it matters. Both are investing in new facilities that will bring forth … [Read more...] about Re-invention.
Always look on the bright side…
Things are looking a lot brighter and clearer at this year’s MIPTV, and I mean that literally. 4K television, the new hi-definition video format which I have covered in March, is going to be a key highlight at the upcoming market. In this issue, I ask Reed MIDEM why it chose to retire its regular Stereoscopic 3D conferences and screenings in exchange for tracks on the new video format that is 4K, a.k.a Ultra HD. It’s a Wrap!
I count myself privileged to have witnessed some 400 industry professionals from across Asia gather at the Shangri-La, Singapore for the 17th Asian Television Awards (ATA) in December. Above are the post awards (read: relieved!) faces of the Contineo Media team, albeit with sweaty foreheads, who slogged all year to make this happen! The above picture is a mere representation of course. The entire event is admittedly not just Contineo’s – we have so many to thank. A shout out to our … [Read more...] about It’s a Wrap!

Fifty Shades of Brands
The power of a TV brand lies not just in its ability to dazzle, but also in its tenacity to thrive beyond linear TV. Just ask B1 and B2 from Bananas in Pyjamas; the twin preschool characters who “ambushed” me on the market floor (Ok I lied. I actually hunted them like a crazed Bieber fan just to get this shot). For a 20-year-old brand that’s aired in over 70 countries, the Endemol property’s reinvention – stripping the suited actors and donning the animation pjs … [Read more...] about Fifty Shades of Brands
