El Señor de los Cielos wins first-ever Emmy® Award
New York – Telemundo’s original production El Señor de los Cielos won the first-ever Emmy® award given in the category of Non-English Language U.S. Primetime Programme at the 42nd edition of the International Emmy® Awards held in New York City.
“We are extremely proud to be recognised by our industry peers for this project which perfectly embodies our super series format,” said Joshua Mintz, Executive Vice President of Scripted Programming & General Manager for Telemundo Studios. “The success of the El Señor de los Cielos has been possible thanks to a great team of professionals at Telemundo Studios and a very powerful cast led by our very own Rafael Amaya.”
Produced by Telemundo Studios and filmed by Argos Television, El Señor de los Cielos is one of the network’s most ambitious productions to date and is already in preproduction for its third season, slated to premiere in 2015.
“Telemundo’s productions and innovative formats are extremely popular around the world and this recognition from the international community validates our high quality standards and production values,” added Marcos Santana, President of Telemundo Internacional. “Our successful super series feature returning scripted drama stories that are edgier, action packed and faster pace than your traditional novelas. Most recently, El Señor de los Cielos has been ranked #1 in its daypart in Televisa’s Channel 9 in Mexico.”
El Señor de los Cielos tells the story of Aurelio Casillas (Rafael Amaya), one of the most prominent Mexican drug lords from the 1990’s, whose ambition was to become one of the richest and most powerful men in Mexico. From the moment his photo was published, his face became his biggest stumbling block. The authorities, as well as his enemies, began to pursue him and he opted for high-risk plastic surgery to conceal his identity.
