Mud, Sweat and Gears
An original BBC America and BBC Worldwide commission, Mud, Sweat and Gears is the ultimate car construction and challenge competition where hosts, Tom ‘Wookie’ Ford and Jonny Smith, lead their teams of petrolheads go head-to- head super-customising, super-racing and generally blowing up the craziest mutated cars this side of Mad Max!
With a different theme for each episode, rival team leaders, Jonny and Wookie, select a pretty ordinary base car then work against the clock with their team members to rip it apart and radically redesign it.
Once the teams have their machines fixed up and ready to race, epic adventures unfold in a contest where literally anything can – and will – happen. In an added twist, after the thrills and spills of the three stunt challenges, the losing team has to stand by and watch as their lovingly crafted vehicle is dramatically destroyed!
Life Below Zero
A BBC Production, this series follow the drama and hardships faced by four Alaskan households living off the grid in this merciless territory as they battle to survive the long, dark, freezing winter.
The huge U.S. state of Alaska boasts some of the world’s most deadly weather, with temperatures regularly plummeting to a lethal -80 Fahrenheit, freezing exposed limbs in minutes.
Yet it is also home to some of the toughest, most resilient, most isolated people in the world. Living miles from the nearest road network and completely cut off once winter descends, they spend months preparing for the big freeze.
The series follows the stories of people like hunter Chip and his native Inupiaq wife Agnes, who live with their seven children on the Kobuk River in the north west of Alaska. The family moves seasonally to track down the best hunt, pitching tents in the snow or on ice, and everyone plays an active part in keeping the family alive.
For all of those featured – whether they’re lone wolves or have families – life in the Alaskan bush is all about survival in the face of unrelenting weather, scarce resources and man-eating carnivores.
Dolphins – Spy in the Pod
Using the trademark blend of extraordinary imagery, analysis of behaviour and moments of humour, the latest Spy series looks at the secret lives of one of the world’s most popular and charismatic of animals – the dolphin.
Dolphins are one of the most social and playful animals on the planet. They develop strong family and group relationships and often work with other species to find a meal, whilst having plenty of fun along the way.
This BBC Natural History Unit (NHU) blue chip series focusses on a wild bottlenose dolphin pod off the coast of Mozambique, exploring the unexpected and often never before seen aspects of dolphin behaviour, providing fascinating new insights into their lives.
As with all the Spy programmes, specially designed cameras and the latest technology allows the series to really get to know the species. For the first time, state of the art ‘Spy Creatures’ infiltrate the dolphins’ underwater world, often interacting and engaging the curiosity of the dolphins themselves, offering a unique glimpse of their intelligence and personalities. A trained double agent dolphin, with cameras on its back and sides, brings back unique footage of its encounters and the unseen behaviour from right inside the pod.
Top Gear (series 22)
Top Gear, the world’s biggest car programme, returns for an explosive and extra-long run of brand new programmes. In the first episode of the series, Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May are in Russia for an incredible race across the vast and very beautiful urban landscape of St Petersburg. May defends the honour of the car in a very small Renault, Hammond tries to prove that pedalling is faster by saddling up a bicycle, whilst Clarkson attempts to demonstrate that water is the quickest way across town, especially if you’re in a hovercraft. To make matters more complicated, all three presenters are racing not only each other but also The Stig, who is silently making his way towards the finish line on public transport.
