Singapore has kick-started its plans for an open access Next Generation National Broadband Network (Next Gen NBN) by 2015 with a Request-For-Proposal (RFP) opened to interested parties to design, build and operate the infrastructure layer. The government will provide grants of up to S$750 million (US$520.2 million) for the project and expects to award the winning bid by Q3 2008. The Next Gen NBN is expected to offer “pervasive and competitively priced ultra high-speed broadband connectivity” to business users and consumers at homes, schools and other premises. Next Generation Services (NGS) including HD video conferencing, telemedicine, Grid Computing-on-Demand, security and immersive learning applications will be available over the Next Gen NBN from 2010.
