It was a night of glitz and glam as some of the biggest names in the television industry gathered at the Marina Bay Sands Expo & Convention Hall for the 19th Asian Television Awards (ATA). Before the awards, the red carpet saw stars like Pierre Ng, 2moro, Tosh Zhang, Selena Li, Yvette King, Wongsakorn Paramatthakorn, Dennis Trillo and Hsieh Chiung-Hsuan decked out in their glitzy outfits.
The event – held in recognition to celebrate the best in Asian television – was packed with celebrity star power and touching acceptance speeches as guests mingled and posed for photos. Hosted by Harith Iskandar, Stephanie Carrington, George Young and Sazzy Falak, guests were treated to a performance by local artiste Taufik Bastisah before the second half of the show.
Sam Tan, Minister of State, Prime Minister’s Office and Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth was the Guestof- Honour for the event, alongside Gabriel Lim, CEO, and Angeline Poh, Assistant Chief Executive (Industry), Media Development Authority of Singapore.
Last year, the proceedings of the ATA were carried by FOX and MediaCorp. To further enhance the standing of the Awards and build its brand amongst the viewers of the television industry, this year sees Bangkok TV and Astro joining as a Broadcast Partner, carrying the proceedings on its Channel 7HD, Astro Ria and Astro Maya HD respectively, along with FOX’s STAR world and MediaCorp’s Channel 5, reaching out to more than 40 million households across Asia-Pacific.
Poh said, “As a constituent event of the inaugural Singapore Media Festival, this year’s ATA is part of a larger celebration of Asian film and television. Tonight, the hard work and creativity of the people behind the most popular Asian television programmes will be recognised.”
The ATA has also introduced a new category – ‘Best Digital Fiction & Non-Fiction Programme/Series’ this year, to give recognition to programmes that cater to viewers on the internet. In his opening monologue, Raymond Wong, CEO, Contineo Media and Chairman of the Asian Television Awards said, “Technology will address some of the fragmentation we are seeing by curating and serving customers with content that is relevant to them, thus creating an infinite spectrum of highly personalised channels. Perhaps one day, we will not refer to ‘online’ and ‘traditional’ content but, rather, content will be simply storytelling delivered over a number of platforms and devices and in any number of formats to best serve both the story and the consumer.”
MediaCorp emerged a big winner this year with a significant pool of talent and original formats contributing to the wins in numerous categories. The broadcaster garnered a record of 39 nominations – double of those it had last year. This year, MediaCorp took home eight awards. Comedy series Spouse for House won three awards including ‘Best Comedy Programme’ and ‘Best Original Screenplay’. Comedienne Irene Ang swept the award for ‘Best Comedy Performance by an Actor/Actress’, 12 years after her last run with Phua Chu Kang (PCK) Pte Ltd.
“We hope that more people will watch the second season, because this is a really good show as proven. I’m surprised that after PCK, I have another show that I can call my own and I love this ‘family’ so much,” commented Ang.
She added that the success of the show was due to its cast, which was surprisingly put-together, and the amount of effort put into the script to connect with the audience. She emphasised that making a good show did not require a huge budget, but instead, good people behind and in-front of the cameras.
Television Asia Plus asked Spouse for House scriptwriters Tan Wei-Lyn and Lillian Wang how they felt winning the ‘Best Original Screenplay’ award. “We’re still in shock. It was a very challenging comedy to do; the schedules were really very tight, so it’s amazing that we came this far. We really didn’t expect it.”
Without doubt, good things come to those who wait. This saying rings true for actors like Pierre Png, who was also nominated last year. This year, he nabbed the ‘Best Actor in a Leading Role’ for his role in the first season of thriller Zero Calling. “It’s about time. I think Zero Calling is something that our English channel needs because it has a really good script and directors. It takes a very dedicated and serious actor to take on this role, take directions and work well with the co-stars. I did my best and with my 15 years of experience it was a combination of all these factors that made me win,” said Png, who seemed to be in a state of surprise from the unexpected turn of events.
Fellow actor Rayson Tan also got his big break, bagging the award for ‘Best Actor in a Supporting Role’. “Honestly speaking, the word ‘happy’ cannot even describe how I feel right now. MediaCorp has supported me for 24 years but I’ve not gotten the chance to go on stage to thank the company. But this time, I finally got my chance to. I’m unsure of how to describe the joy I feel right now. I’m not sure how I won because there were many strong competitors,” Tan said.
Budding seven year-old Malaysian actress Puteri Balqis Azizi gave her female seniors a run for their money, clinching the award for ‘Best Actress in a Leading Role’ for her solid performance in Balqis, making her the youngest award winner. Taiwan also bagged two awards, with one going to actress Hsieh Chiung-Hsuan for ‘Best Actress in a Supporting Role’.
Larry Namer, President & CEO, Metan Global Entertainment Group, was present to receive the award for ‘Outstanding Contribution to Asian Television’. “It was my first time and it was interesting and amazing to see the quality of all the nominees. I think we’re going to see more mixed media in the coming future. For me, it’s thrilling because for the past five years, I’ve been producing programming only in Mandarin and for the Chinese audience, which has been fun. I think having the awards is great and I really do believe that the scene in Asia is really where everything is happening and that’s why I packed up and left Hollywood,” said Namer.
MediaCorp once again beat a host of its regional contenders to clinch the coveted ‘Terrestrial Broadcaster of the Year’ award for the 11th time at the annual event. It also won the ‘Terrestrial Channel of the Year’ award.
Shaun Seow, CEO of MediaCorp said, “We’re revamping Channel 5, to cater to English speaking audiences. Digital is going to be a very big part of our mix because we know that people are watching us anytime, anywhere and on any device, so we have to make sure we’ve got content that they would want to watch, whenever and wherever.
“I think the winning formula is always criticising and beating ourselves up to make sure we do better because we think we owe it and we’re never complacent. We know that it’s going to be challenging going ahead and we have to keep improving ourselves.”
Bernard Lim, Managing Director of MediaCorp TV said, “2015 is a very important year for Channel 5 as we’re relaunching our content and programmes with greater emphasis for local productions. Local is the key as we continue our dreams to be the definitive and choice channels for the English-speaking Singaporeans. I think the team back home has worked very hard for these results and we’re very thankful for this award.”
Cable News Network (CNN International) bagged a total of five awards, including two major awards – the ‘Cable and Satellite Channel of the Year’, for the second consecutive year, and ‘Cable and Satellite Network of the Year’.
“A lot of what we cover is basically thanks to the people who’ve allowed us to tell their stories and let us into their lives. Tonight is an honour of them. We’re very honoured and would like to thank the ATA and the judges for recognising all the work we’ve put in. You never know what each day brings and last year has been an emotional ride for CNN; we’ve had tragic, courageous and amazing stories that we followed throughout the year and we’re excited to see what 2015 will bring,” said Sarita Harilela, Supervising Producer, CNN Hong Kong.
The ‘Best News Programme’ title went to CNN flagship programme News Stream. Anchored from CNN Hong Kong by Kristie Lu Stout, News Stream is a daily hard-news show that uses technology to give viewers a better understanding of the world. Kristie Lu Stout was also awarded ‘Best Current Affairs Presenter’. The anchor and correspondent regularly moderates at leading conferences worldwide, and is also the host of CNN’s monthly On China show. The CNN Freedom Project: Every Day in Cambodia, which investigates the underground system of child sex trafficking, was awarded ‘Best Documentary Series’.
“I am also proud the CNN Freedom Project has been recognised again. Human trafficking is a shameful trade that must be stopped. At CNN we will continue to use the full range of our international resources to track and champion the story,” said Tony Maddox, Executive Vice President and Managing Director of CNN International.
Under the umbrella of the inaugural Singapore Media Festival (SMF), the Asian Television Awards was held in conjunction with Asia’s leading television and film content market, the Asia TV Forum & Market (ATF), and the Singapore International Film Festival (SGIFF) to leverage on the synergy of these two events and offer a wider range of activities.
“We are meeting at an exciting time for Asia’s media industry. The outlook for the industry is positive. A more affluent and discerning middle class is spending more on entertainment. Markets like China, India and Indonesia are growing rapidly. International players are all looking for ways to make inroads into the region,” said Lawrence Wong, Minister for Culture, Community and Youth & Second Minister for Communications and Information at the official opening of the ATF and ScreenSingapore.
“Singapore is well-positioned to take advantage of these opportunities. We are located at the heart of Southeast Asia. We are a gateway between the East and West, helping Western media companies expand into Asia, and vice versa. We are also supporting the growth of this exciting industry, including promoting activities like film financing for films produced in the region.”
Each edition of the Asia TV Forum & Market (ATF) and ScreenSingapore offers opportunities for international media players to deepen their collaborations with Asian and Singaporean companies and strengthen understanding of the region’s media landscape through comprehensive sharing sessions.
A pre-market conference was held the day prior, featuring a robust lineup of industry heavyweights. Kicking off the conference were two industry luminaries from China’s entertainment powerhouse which included James Zhonglei Wang, President of Huayi Brothers Media Corporation, who delivered the opening keynote “Rising from the East – Huayi Brothers: Crossing Boundaries Going Beyond Entertainment” and Ma Dong, Chief Content Officer of Baidu’s IQIYI, who delivered the session “Digital China: The New Storyteller – IQIYI”. Their sessions gave attendees insight into China’s entertainment and media market. During Dong’s session, he discussed the consolidation of China’s video streaming market.
In 2013, PPS was acquired by Baidu and though both IQIYI and PPS operate separately under Baidu ownership, they have consolidated their management sales and content systems. In 2014, IQIYI produced about 13 online programmes and is aiming to double that to 30 or more this year. Keeping in line with this effort, the platform has partnered with numerous production companies in China and have set aside a considerable budget for the production of Hollywood films. As the platform targets viewers in their 20s and early 30s, Dong is set on acquiring various titles which cater to a younger audience. He is also looking to acquire formats which are easily adaptable to the Chinese market. Looking forward, Dong expects an increase in the use of the second screen and further consolidation of China’s streaming market.
Gateway into Asia
Also present was Alon Shtruzman, CEO of Israel’s Keshet International, who shared his company’s expansion strategy to tap into Asia’s growing market. “There’s creativity in Asia.
We believe in sourcing content from everywhere. Asia is a great market with lots of formats. We’re looking for more unscripted or scripted content and Asia is a great source for material.”
Keshet International is also looking to produce more American shows this year and have secured two companies in the U.S. for both scripted and unscripted content. Last year, they sold spy drama MICE in a licensed deal to South Korea, making it the first-ever Israeli-Korean drama to air. The scripted format is adapted and produced by IMTV, with its first season set to air early this year on Korean Broadcasting System (KBS). Likewise, MICE was also ordered to series by the National Broadcasting Company (NBC) and has been adapted and written for the U.S. by George Nolfi, and will begin airing under the title Allegiance on 5 February. Keshet International’s international talent show Rising Star has also garnered success in China, with its launch ranked as the third most viewed show nationwide. The two-season deal is produced by Enlight Media and broadcasted on the China state television channel China Central Television (CCTV).
Shtruzman said, “We hope to sell more formats in Asia and are looking to produce content with Asian partners. Keshet International is very open to co-productions and is willing to look at all kinds of financial models because we understand that different markets operate differently.”
On the market front, the ATF continued to present a stronger and wider array of content, with showings from seven international studios – CBS Studios, MGM Worldwide, NBC Universal, Paramount Pictures, Sony Pictures, The Walt Disney and Warner Brothers.
Additionally, a bigger attendance was seen from more established markets such as China, Japan, South Korea, India, Thailand, and also from developing markets like Indonesia, Vietnam, Cambodia and Myanmar. A number of the countries also made their first representation at the market, including Bangladesh, Croatia, Finland, Nepal and Poland.
“At Reed Exhibitions, we are delighted to have been part of the Asian entertainment content industry for the past 15 years, and to provide a platform where the East and West meet and where significant milestones are set,” said Michelle Lim, Managing Director, Reed Exhibitions at the official opening of the ATF and ScreenSingapore.
Further attesting to the efforts of the SMF, China’s Bona Film paired up with Singapore-based fund management company Tembusu Partners and Singaporean media entrepreneur Calvin Cheng in a USD$100 million media fund – the first of its kind in Singapore – to create opportunities for foreign investors to participate in China’s fast growing media market.
Bomanbridge Media, a Singapore-based content distribution and production agency, also inked a raft of sales in territories including New Zealand, Thailand, Korea. The company expanded to South Korea, Mongolia and India last year and launched their first production, international lifestyle and cooking show Haute & Saucy with Kelly Randall Sia.
“Bomanbridge has never been stronger. We come into ATF closing several major deals in the region for hundreds of hours of programming. Additionally, with our new offices in India and Korea and soon Mongolia, we expect to have a record breaking year for sales. Producers trust us to place their programmes to the best broadcasters in the region,” said Sonia Fleck, CEO of Bomanbridge Media.
