Singapore – activeTV, producer of reality series The Amazing Race Asia, has optioned format rights to the BBC celebrity ancestry series Who Do You Think You Are? (WDYTYA) from UK indie Wall To Wall, for an Asian version of the show. Each one hour episode of WDYTYA follows a celebrity’s journey back through their family tree which usually springs twists and turns, as well as reveals secrets and historical insights. Apart from being commissioned for a fifth series in the UK, the Australia-produced WDYTYA has drawn record ratings for pubcaster SBS, while a locally produced version also screens in Canada on CBC. activeTV has been gearing up its Asian-based operations in recent months but has kept mum about its plans beyond The Amazing Race Asia series 3 which is now in pre-production for Sony Pictures Entertainment Networks Asia’s AXN. “We’ll have some announcements in due course but our option on ‘Who Do You Think You Are?’ is a pretty clear indication that we’ll be pushing our production capabilities into other genres as well as reality programming,” said activeTV president Michael McKay.
