Korea – Korea’s two leading broadband firms – KT and Hanarotelecom – are vying to forge tie-ups with leading local and foreign English education companies to secure and produce quality IPTV content in the hope that a wider choice of content and cheap subscription fees will help promote the potential of Web TV, which now has only 1.5 million subscribers nationwide. IPTV subscribers are now able to watch thousands of English education titles on demand for less than 10,000 won (US$9.80) per month. Hanarotelecom offers English education programs such as PBS’s Between the Lions and BBC’s Learning English with Ozmo. Hana TV also allows subscribers to watch Disney’s popular TV series and educational content. KT has also secured quality and diverse educational content for its Mega TV IPTV service. It has also started to produce English educational content via affiliate, Olive Nine, adding animation and music titles to content produced by British Council Korea and Scholastic Corp. KT said it has secured nearly 3,000 English educational titles for its IPTV channel for children, Mega Kids. From this month, the company will offer educational content produced by the Princeton Review to help its subscribers prepare for English tests such as iBT TOEFL and SSAT. IPTV is expected to gain ground in South Korea because live broadcasts are to be permitted within the year. The National Assembly passed a law on IPTV in December 2007, which is to take effect in October. Currently, over 1.5 million households watch IPTV, while 18 million households subscribe to other pay TV services – cable and satellite television.
