
CNN International has promoted Irene Nasser to the role of Director of News, Video. Based at the network’s Asia-Pacific headquarters in Hong Kong, she will help set the global news agenda for CNN during Asia hours, coordinating newsgathering resources, and working closely with colleagues across the organization to deliver distinctive and compelling cross-platform visual storytelling.
Previously Senior News Producer, Video at CNN, Nasser’s work has included covering the war in Gaza and the expanding conflict in the Middle East, US-China relations, India-Pakistan tensions, the 2022 Iran protests, Former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s assassination, and COVID in China among many other stories.
Nasser joined CNN from Al Jazeera English, where she was based at network’s global headquarters in Doha. There she was responsible for overseeing teams in the field, breaking news, and managing planning coverage. She also worked as an on-ground coordinator during major news events and as a fill-in correspondent.
Nasser has almost twenty years of experience in journalism, media and documentary making, working extensively across the Middle East covering the 2014 Gaza war, the Syrian uprising and the rise of ISIL. She has worked for several other major news outlets including the UK’s Channel 4 News, VICE, and the Washington Post.
In addition to an Emmy Award for breaking news coverage, Nasser has won a Peabody Award for the short film ‘My Neighbourhood.’ She has a Master’s Degree in International Relations from American University in Washington DC and is a 2017 Ochberg Fellow at the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism.
