ChaiFlicks, the world’s largest streaming platform dedicated to Jewish content from around the world, and Seven. One Studios International, a Seven. One Studios company, one of the leading creators and distributors of entertainment content, have entered into a deal for the exclusive SVOD rights for the US, UK and Australia to both seasons of the hit comedy series “Kid Sister.” Created, written, executive produced by, and starring Simone Nathan (“Our Flag Means Death,” “We Might Regret This”), the series will make its debut on ChaiFlicks this fall. The announcement was made jointly today by Neil Friedman, Co-Founder of ChaiFlicks and Tobias Schulze, SVP of Global Sales at Seven. One Studios International.
Highly acclaimed and hailing from New Zealand, the series which was originally commissioned by TVNZ, earned rave reviews. Stuff said “A confident, bold debut full of chutzpah that deserves to find an audience, both among ‘insiders’ and Kiwis from all walks of life.” The Spin Off hailed “Nathan clearly has a unique Kiwi perspective, plenty to say, and a smart, zesty, frank way of expressing it.” FilmInk called it “…a brilliant snapshot of modern dating, avoiding the overplayed boy-meets-girl formula by throwing a pregnancy into the mix and turning rom-com clichés on their head.” Hey Alma described the series as “…laugh-out-loud funny,” while Haaretz hailed it “…the funniest Jewish comedy in years.”
Neil Friedman at ChaiFlicks comments, “Simone Nathan is an extraordinary talent. Her sharp writing, distinctive sense of humor, and authentic portrayal of a young woman navigating a deeply conflicted relationship with herself and her family are truly remarkable. I would describe her voice as a blend of Lena Dunham and Jenny Slate—smart, fearless, and refreshingly original—and ‘Kid Sister’ is a perfect showcase for her exceptional talent.”
Simone is no novice when it comes to the creation of popular TV series. She was a Co-Producer and Staff Writer on HBO Max’s Our Flag Means Death, worked on Comedy Central’s Inside Amy Schumer, and spent time in the writers’ room on Netflix’s Bloodline.
On “Kid Sister” being picked up by ChaiFlicks, Simone states, “I’ve always hoped that audiences beyond New Zealand would connect with this series and the story we’re telling. At its core, the show explores the universal pressure many people face from family and society to settle down, regardless of their religion, background, or gender. Because so many elements of my own life are woven into the series, it’s especially meaningful to share it with a broader audience.”
The series, which is semi-autobiographical, follows Lulu (Nathan), an unmarried 29-year-old living with her Jewish family in Auckland, New Zealand, where a national population census famously recorded that there are more Jedis than Jews in the country. Between her family’s incessant pressure to keep their traditions alive and hide her secret relationship with Ollie, her very non-Jewish boyfriend, Lulu struggles to balance her love of family and culture as she attempts to forge her own path forward. “Kid Sister” was made by Greenstone TV, produced by Emily Aderton, and directed by Aidee Walker.
ChaiFlicks has acquired both seasons of the series, totaling 10 episodes (5 per season), approximately 20 minutes each. The deal was negotiated by Bill Weiner, Co-Founder of ChaiFlicks, and Fleur Wheatley, VP Sales at Seven. One Studios International.
